Please Log inThe Bedeken Tradition
Think of this as a traditional “first look.” It is high energy and fun.
First, men and women are separated. Women give speeches and blessings to the bride, and men give speeches and blessings to the groom. The groom is then danced by male friends to the bride who sits on a chair and is surrounded by female family and friends. The men arrive with raucous singing, and the groom veils the bride. This brief ceremony is called the bedeken. Everyone then proceeds back outside to then enter the sanctuary, and the wedding ceremony begins.
If you would like to give a quick blessing or toast, you may have the opportunity to do so before the groom is paraded to the bride.
For our wedding, expect for the blessings/toasts to begin at 5:45 (when the busses arrive). After 15 minutes, Adam will be paraded to Leigh to lower her veil. Then, everyone will head outside, enter the sanctuary through the main double doors, and be seated as the ceremony begins.
Originally built in the early 1820s as a sugar refinery, Generations Hall offers a glimpse into a bygone era. The venue showcases artwork by prominent artists George Schmidt & Xavier deCallatay depicting the history of New Orleans Jazz. This historic venue has hosted artists such as Ray Charles, ZZ Top, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Blue Man Group, Irma Thomas, Alan Toussaint, and Jimmy Buffet just to name a few!
