Things to Do

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park, just a short drive from Miami, protects one of Florida's most unique natural features. These swamplands, covering about 1.5 million acres, are home to alligators, crocodiles, snakes, birds, and other Floridian wildlife. This whole area is essentially a shallow river flowing out to the ocean.

Within the park is the informative Royal Palm Visitors Center, as well as walking trails and boardwalks for wildlife viewing. One of the most popular walking trails in the park is the Anhinga Trail, which leaves from the Visitor Center. This trail is less than a mile long but leads through terrain where visitors are likely to see alligators and other animals. This trail is wheelchair accessible and non-strenuous.

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the Everglades is on an airboat tour. These high-speed boat trips take visitors out into the marshes and streams to see alligators and other wildlife.

Everglades Alligator Farm

If you're down for alligator spotting and are interested in seeing these fearsome creatures in their natural habitat, then be sure to head down to the Everglades Alligator Farm, which is home to more than 2,000 alligators! Discover the mysteries of the Everglades at South Florida's oldest alligator farm, located near the main entrance of Everglades National Park.

The farm has an awesome staff of Airboat drivers, Alligator Experts, and even Snake handlers. Glide across the Everglades on one of the guided airboat tours and catch one of the alligator, snake, and wildlife shows that are performed hourly.

Biscayne National Park

The best of Florida’s natural beauty can be seen at Biscayne National Park. This is an awesome choice for things to do in Homestead, FL, especially if you love the great outdoors. In case you didn’t know, Florida is home to some incredibly delicate corals, mangroves, and swamps. So, to preserve this, Biscayne National Park was created.

Biscayne National Park hosts some of the most popular water-based things to do in Homestead FL such as swimming and kayaking! There are also plenty of stunning hikes on offer in the area, and you’ll be able to snap several incredible pictures along the way.

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens

Situated on 83 sprawling acres of lush, colorful tropical gardens, rainforests, and coastal habitat, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables is one of the premier botanic gardens in the country. With a mission to share the joy and beauty of tropical gardening, it was founded in 1938 by famed plant explorer Dr. David Fairchild. Today, the garden’s collection includes more than 3,400 species, including tropical fruit, orchids, butterflies, and native and exotic plants throughout its Uplands and Lowlands ecosystems and exhibits.

With so many ways to experience the gardens, a visit to Fairchild makes for a perfect outdoor adventure for families, a romantic date, or simply a sublime oasis for anyone who enjoys the beauty of the natural world. To cap off your visit, enjoy a breezy lunch at the onsite Glasshouse Café by Le Basque, set in a lovely limestone cottage with outdoor dining available.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

This National Historic Landmark, set on 28 acres, was the luxurious winter home of 20th-century industrialist, James Deering. Built in 1916, the mansion features 34 rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The Italian Renaissance-style villa is filled with an impressive collection of European furniture and decorative arts from the 15th to 19th centuries. The grounds and gardens contain beautiful Italian and French fountains, pools, and sculptures. A breakwater at the base of the steps leading into Biscayne Bay is an ornately carved barge, featuring female figures.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an enduring, inclusive, and innovative place that inspires people to embrace the cultural vitality and environmental sustainability of the world around us. Connect with the past, understand the present, and shape the future by exploring the resources found here. Whether you’re a garden lover or a history buff, you can explore Vizcaya your own way.

Key Biscayne Beaches & Parks

South, beyond Miami Beach and over the Rickenbacker Causeway, is Key Biscayne, a small community with lovely beaches and beautiful parks. A relaxing beach day on beautiful Key Biscayne is a favorite Miami pastime.

Of particular note is Crandon Park with an offshore reef that leaves the shoreline protected from big waves and perfect for swimming. Crandon Park has a Family Amusement Center and a Nature Center. There is generally ample parking, good facilities, chair rentals available, and lifeguards on duty. On windy days, you may see kiteboarders ripping across the waves, being towed by their colorful kites.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park/Beach, located just minutes from downtown Miami on the tip of Key Biscayne, is a relaxing and scenic alternative to some of Miami's more popular beaches that features a 1.25-mile-long soft-sand beach. It is also home to the historic 1825 Cape Florida Lighthouse, which offers visitors breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay through guided tours. Be sure to stay to see the stunning sunsets over the bay. Visitors may also explore the park's native vegetation on foot, on a bicycle, by boat, or by kayak. Fishing enthusiasts or families looking to cast a line can grab some bait and tackle and fish from the seawall along Biscayne Bay. There are two onsite restaurants, the Lighthouse Café which faces the beach, and Boaters Grill, located on a quiet lagoon. Both restaurants offer delicious Cuban food, sandwiches, and cold drinks. If you prefer to pack a picnic, this is a great beach for some sandwiches beneath a reserved pavilion.
