Flights

Getting to Pescara by Flight:

We generally recommend flying direct to Abruzzo International Airport based in Pescara (Airport code PSR/LIBP), which is approximately 3 km outside Pescara. A bus which reaches the city centre runs about every 15/20 minutes depending on the time and day of arrival. It departs from outside the terminal exit and will approximately take 20 min to get to centre.

Pescara Airport is served by low-cost carrier Ryanair. You can fly direct to Abruzzo from national and European destinations that include: Milan Bergamo, London, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Frankfurt, Prague & Warsaw. National carrier Alitalia has frequent departures from Milan Linate.

Alternatively, the other nearest airport is located in Ancona, also served by low-cost Ryanair. Ancona is about a 2h bus journey to Pescara, or a 1.5h train journey. Buses and Trains can be taken from Ancona Train Station (Stazione Centrale). The bus company offering the route is Flixbus, with tickets available online at www.flixbus.it . By train instead, tickets can be booked on www.trenitalia.

Should you wish to spend a few days in and around the Eternal city Rome, well you should think about it! Pescara is in fact connected to the Italian Capital by means of frequent buses. Journeys are around 3 to 3.5h by bus. Pescara is directly serviced to the two main Airports in Rome, Fiumicino (which serves International Flights) and Ciampino (which hosts low cost carriers such Ryanair and EasyJet). Two Bus companies provide a direct link between the airports and Pescara city centre:

- Prontobus: Quickest way to get to Pescara from Ciampino or Fiumicino. Tickets are around 50€ Return and can be booked online at: http://www.prontobusitalia.it/index.php?lang=en. Remember to select 'Pescara Terminal Bus' as Arrival city.

- Di Carlo Bus: Available services are from Fiumicino Airport, and from Rome Train Station 'Tiburtina'. Tickets available at: www.dicarlobus.com/ . Prices are similar.

Car and Train

Getting to Pescara by Car or Train:

Car Hire

If you want to book your little Italian Panda and travel like a local, you can do so via the usual Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise etc. They will all be available at airports flown into. From Rome, the car journey from the airports or the city is around 200km, hence around 2.5h hours, traffic permitting. From Ancona's airport instead, it would instead be around 1.5h to 2h.

Trains

The trains in Italy don’t have the greatest reputation, especially in terms of timing. Anyway, to get to Abruzzo from Rome by train you need to get to Tiburtina Railway station, from here you will be able to get out to Sulmona & Pescara but it takes almost 4 hours, so it is highly discouraged. From Ancona instead, you can reach the Ancona Stazione Centrale and catch a train which should take you to Pescara in less than 1.5h.

If you're scared of flying or just fancy a scenic Continental inter rail, and are considering catching the train from London through to Abruzzo, it is possible; Eurostar to Paris, change, get an overnight sleeper down to Pescara via Milan & Bologna, the third part of the of the journey taking over 7 hours that includes 3 hr transit. Look at Seat61 for advice.
