If you are leaving from Denver you can expect the drive to take about 4 hours*. The beautiful scenery definitely makes the drive enjoyable.
In my (David's) opinion, the view of the Collegiate Range from Buena Vista makes the drive worth it. You will also have an opportunity to spot one of Colorado's hundreds of thousands if not millions of wild bears.
*Please note, returning on Monday will likely be a longer drive. On holiday weekends we've experienced traffic causing the total drive time to be 6 hrs. If you can't stay a day later, consider departing later around 3 or 4pm to avoid the congestion.
