Flying to Bulgaria

The easiest way to travel to Bulgaria would be to fly to Sofia. There are regular Lufthansa flights three times a day from Munich, as well es low-budget Wizzair/Ryanair flights from Memmingen. Sozopol is a 4-hour highway drive away from Sofia.

The closest airport to Sozopol is in Burgas. It is only 45 minute-drive to Sozopol. However it is a rather small charter airport.

As of now there are no regular flights from Munich/ Memmingen/ Nürnberg to Burgas.

However during the summer months there are charters from south Germany. Please check routinely the airlines' websites for more information. Normally they announce them in the beginning of spring.

There are now charters from Stuttgart, Köln, Hamburg etc.

Another airport on the Black Sea is in Varna. It is 2,5 hours away from Burgas. There are currently no direct flights from Munich (there is one through Vienna), but charters may come up in time.

There are currently flights from Memmingen to Varna for June 2023, so check them out.

Another alternative would be the airport in Plovdiv. Wizzair flies from Memmingen to Plovdiv. The drive from Plovdiv to Sozopol would be 3 hours on the highway.

In theory, you can fly through Bucharest, but it's a long drive to Sozopol (no highway).

Although it looks close to Sozopol, we would not recommend flying to Istanbul. Getting out of this metropolis costs a lot of time, the road from Turkey to Sozopol is not a highway and you will have to go through the land border, which could take hours.

Getting to Sozopol (Apollonia Pontica)

How to get to Sozopol

Rent-a-car: Depending on where you fly to, we would recommend renting a car. All of the major rent-a-car companies have offices in Bulgaria.

Still, from our experience we would recommend one particular company- Top Rent A Car. They are highly professional and have reliable brand new cars.

Arranged Transfer: Additionally, if you would like to have a personal/group transfer our wedding agent could assist in organising it. Just let us know, or write him directly an E-Mail at: martin@yana.bg

Here are some price examples for a one-way transfer to Sozopol in a car with four people (price as a whole, NOT per person)

-from Burgas airport €45

-from Varna airport €150

-from Sofia airport €250

Taxi: If you fly to Burgas, you could take a taxi to Sozopol. Just make sure you take it from the authorised taxi-stands at the airport and NOT from drivers offering their services on the terminal.

Driving in Bulgaria

Please keep in mind, that this is southern Europe. Driving in Bulgaria is similar to driving in Greece or Italy.

Still the road between Sofia and Burgas is a well-kept highway. ;)

We recommend a very nice app with integrated maps, directions and radar/police alerts. It is called Waze. (if you get stopped by the police, shut down the app!)

Taxi on the wedding night

If you need a taxi to go to your hotel after the wedding, we have arranged a verified taxi company, who will be working all through the night.

If you want to order a taxi, call this number:

+359 88 9679637

Currency

Keep in mind, that in Bulgaria the currency is Lev.

1 Lev is approximately 0,5 Euro.

1 Euro is circa 1,90-1,95 Leva

While you can pay in most shops and restaurants with a debit/credit card, it is very important that you exchange some Leva and have cash with you!

Taxis, buses, small shops or small restaurants don't accept card payments.

Be careful where you exchange your money!

Best way is to withdraw directly money on a bank automat and get it directly in Leva. Exchanging in a bank is also secure.

Be aware of the exchange bureaus! Sometimes they put fake courses outside/inside the bureaus. Always check twice the course you are exchanging to! Anything less than 1,90 leva for 1 Euro is suspicious!
