All you need to know
Kinross-shire is a beautiful county bordered by Perthshire, Fife and Clackmannanshire. Set amidst gently rolling hills it is the ideal location for hillwalking, golf, cycling, fishing, bird watching or just relaxing and enjoying the beauty of Scotland.
The county town, Kinross, is situated at junction 6 on the M90 providing easy access from Edinburgh (28 miles), Glasgow (45 miles), Perth (18 miles) and St Andrews (30 miles).
We encourage guests to stay in Kinross-shire and arrive before the day of the Welcome BBQ which is on Friday 3rd July 2020.
For day activities on Friday 3rd July, Kinross Golf Club boasts two 18-hole golf courses and we have block booked morning tee times for those who wish to play. For further details on how to book a spot and secure club hire, please see the the Sub-Section below for 'Golf at Kinross Golf Club on Friday 3rd July'.
Many popular activities tend to be focused on Loch Leven and include the Loch Leven Heritage Trail or a boat trip visit to Loch Leven Castle (a historic site where Mary Queen Scots was imprisoned in 1567).
Cycling part or all of the 13 mile Loch Leven Heritage Trail is a fun activity and there are 3 nice cafés that adjoin different points of the trail. These are suitable for lunch or coffee breaks and Loch Leven's Larder is a particular favorite. For those interested in bicycle hire, please contact Loch Leven Cycles
Those wishing to travel outside of the town could take the opportunity to visit any one of 3 Royal Palaces - Linlithgow, Scone or Falkland - each of these within a 35 min drive from Kinross. Alternatively, Stirling Castle, the site of many bloody battles between Scotland and England is only a 45 minute drive from Kinross.
Scotland’s 2 major international airports are Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA) and both are a 1 hour or less drive to Kinross.
For those intending to fly from Chicago, currently the only direct flight is available with United Airlines to Edinburgh. We expect that the majority of US guests will find indirect fights via Dublin or London to be most cost effective. Furthermore, we find that flights into Glasgow tend to be less expensive than flying into Edinburgh.
A taxi or mini bus for a group would be very possible from either airport; however there is also ample car rental providers at each airport.
Those wishing to use our celebration as a convenient platform to visit other sites in Europe as part of an extended trip will be able to fly to a wide choice of major cities (London, Dublin, Paris, Rome, Barcelona etc.) from either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
For those who have an interest extending their time in Scotland beyond a 3 night stay for the wedding, to say 1 full week, we would recommend continuing to have Kinross-shire as a base, where day trips to places like Edinburgh, St Andrews and many nearby rural points of interest are easy and convenient (albeit a rental car is highly recommended). This would also be a good idea for those looking to play golf.
Alternatively, a 2 night stay in Edinburgh or Glasgow would make for an enjoyable city-break given their many attractions, including lots of choice for entertainment, eating and drinking.
Those more adventurous who want to see the “real” Scotland will wish to explore the Highlands and Islands of the country. Locations worth considering include Isle of Skye, Glencoe, and Loch Ness/Urquhart Castle. This type of trip will certainly require a car and more forward planning.
Please keep us updated on your travel plans as we are happy to share any advice and tips to those that are interested.
