Wedding Postponement Q&A

2020 announcement

First let me start by saying THANK YOU for the outpour of love, support, sweet messages, comments, and texts we have received since we announced our wedding being postponed. We never expected so much love and support to come our way and we truly, truly appreciate it! This is such an exciting time for Ronak and I still in our lives. It is amazing to have all of these sweet words and well wishes coming our way – it just makes this even more special!

Frequently asked questions- Answered by Ashley

Tell us a little bit about your situation

Postponing the wedding has been weighing heavy on our hearts for awhile. This isn’t our first set back on having a wedding. We have been trying to plan it for quite some time. We were first set on having it at a venue in Asheville, NC in the mountains but with how our lives went, it didn’t pan out. But when we moved back to Texas we knew we wanted it to be close to where we live now-- Austin, Texas. So on New Year's Eve of 2019, we signed a contract to our venue and started to plan….until the pandemic of Covid-19 hit.

When did you first start to think that you might have to postpone?

Two days before the lockdown in Texas, my wedding planner and I were tasting all kinds of different wedding cakes. We were joking about how we hoped there would be enough toilet paper left by May 9. At that point I first started to think we might have to postpone. When the lockdown happened. We put a lot of the planning to a halt and luckily had most of it already planned anyways.
Through March and April, it was hard to think about a wedding at the time when the world was at an unknown state of a lockdown due to COVID-19. The feeling then turned into not having an idea of what we would feel in an hour, tomorrow, next month, or the day the wedding was supposed to happen. We were taking it just one day at a time.

What made the decision for you in the end?

How the decision was ultimately made, was we wanted to wait until a later date when we can celebrate with those that we love safely. The decision was very difficult to make and had many components to factor in. We have been trying to hold off as long as we could to tell everyone. We wanted to make sure our decision wasn’t made out of fear. It had to be an informed and rational decision before telling everyone.
Our venue also had some rules and restrictions for the wedding. The rules and restrictions included social distancing rules of having to stand six feet apart due to Covid-19. During the ceremony, groups of families would have to sit together and be six feet away from other families. Our plan at our venue was to be in a pavilion to have an outside and inside feel. But with restrictions, we were worried about everyone fitting. In the Texas heat, it was not feasible to change the ceremony site to an outside area in August.

Another issue we faced was most of our guest list was outside the state of Texas. Some of our guests were even coming from outside the United States. With having guests who are flying in from all over and the unpredictable times, it is hard to manage what places had restrictions or not. The wedding date in August just didn’t seem feasible and there is too much worry about making sure everyone could get here safely.

Who did you talk to first? What was their feedback?

Ron and I talked to each other first, we had a conversation with our wedding planner and then discussed it with close family members. Every day the information was different, and advice changed constantly. So we talked to our venue and got there stands in regards to our August wedding date. We then talked to our suppliers. We had some of our suppliers reaching out to us, asking if we would be postponing or canceling. We sent a few emails out to our main suppliers of the wedding to let them know how we were feeling and to get an idea of where we stood with them when it came to the postponement.

What was the reaction from suppliers?
Our suppliers have been nothing but amazing. Every single one has done everything they can to help us. Most suppliers have gone above and beyond with their support, some waiving late cancellation fees or delivery charges and some going even further. We are not finished talking to everyone, and we’re hoping to keep all the ventures the same and support a bunch of small business owners in the process.

What is your idea of a perfect wedding?
We want everyone to be able to cheer and laugh and share memories in the same room while being close together. We were hoping to be overwhelmed with love with people who have loved us our whole life. We want to be able to hug those who we hold close when the world isn’t in as much pain as it is right now.

What are you doing in the meantime?
In the meantime, Ron and I, as a doctor and a nurse, will continue the fight against Covid-19. Whether it is testing, coordinating, or comforting patients. We are working on the rescheduling process trying to move everything and coordinate with all our vendors. There are still a lot of details needing to be worked out. Stay tuned because Ron and I are always up to something.

Have you set another date?

We’re now working towards a date; we’re just waiting for one more piece of the puzzle to come together and hope that this uncertain time is behind us by then. I will say, it will have to be in 2021 because we can’t push it back just a few months due to the possible new wave of Covid-19 infections.

What are you doing with all your ‘wedding stuff’ that you must have at home?!

Most of our “stuff” can be rolled over to the new date, except for a few things, which will need a new date printed on them. Luckily, most of the wedding stuff didn’t have the date on it. Some of our wedding supplies have not arrived yet anyway. A lot of it was delayed in shipping. The majority of the wedding supplies were coming from India, and since there was a lockdown there, nothing has shipped!

In other news, we are hoping to be sending out new invitations or save the dates at some point.

How do you feel now that you’ve postponed?

The past couple of weeks have been filled with uncertainty, and as soon as we made the decision to postpone and started talking to suppliers I started to come to peace with it.
A lot of things get put into perspective, and while a wedding is one of, if not the biggest things to happen in someone’s life, we have a lot to be grateful for.
I think by postponing our wedding, some good things will come out of it. We hope to invite more guests because Ron and I have made new friends since moving back to Texas that we didn’t originally get the chance to invite. We are also hoping that others who originally said they couldn’t come might be able to attend now.
In a funny way, it’s actually brought us even closer together. Ron and I have survived through a lot of crazy situations together and have even been trapped together in an apartment for 15 days during a hurricane. This is just another curve in the road we are facing.
I keep reminding myself that this truly isn’t the end of the world. If anything, it is just another chapter to our story. And one day it will be one heck of a story to tell.
