Laura & Robert
February 9, 2024
Laura was living and working in the Paso Robles wine region at Bodega de Edgar during the 2020 pandemic. Chuck and Tina Montoya, longtime friends of the Marquez family are close with the owner of the winery Laura worked at and were able to get in for a private tasting when all the wineries were closed for COVID19.
Robert tagged along for the tasting as his first stop on a 3-month long road trip. Laura, being told to treat the Montoyas as VIPs didn't pay too much attention to Robert. Robert on the other hand told his mom, Debbie, upon leaving that he could see himself dating Laura.
Upon returning from his 3-month road trip, Robert decided a new adventure was in store and moved to Paso Robles. He befriended someone that he didn't know at the time was Laura's neighbor and shared a yard with her.
Laura walked out of her front door one day to find Robert sitting in her yard enjoying a beer with her neighbor. He proceeded to be there almost daily for the next month hanging out and drinking Modelos, she would occasionally join them.
Robert continued to hangout with Laura's neighbor and whenever she would come home he would offer her a Modelo. At first, she would decline and he would always say, "But I brought one just for you." So, she would sit down and enjoy conversation and drink the single Modelo he brought for her. They began hanging out just the two of them and Laura took it upon herself to show him around town and SLO county.
Soon after, Laura developed a crush and started stepping up the flirting game. Robert, torn whether he wanted to be in a relationship so quickly in a new town kept Laura 'friend zoned'. She continued to try to make it clear she liked him more than friends for what felt like forever...it was realistically only about a week.... until she accepted, they were just going to be friends.
Coincidentally, the same day she decided to give up, Robert decided to give in. He asked Laura what she was doing that day, and she responded going to the beach. He asked if he could join, she agreed. When he shows up, Laura was on the phone with her mom, who she planned on meeting at the beach all along. She felt this wouldn't have been a problem, because she was obviously friend zoned. Robert knew his plan to make a move was ruined.
At the beach, they had a great time. Drank rosé, laughed, Robert lost his wallet in the ocean, some random kids found it. He knew he had to come up with a plan b. Laura and Robert were talking about Champagne and she asked him if he had watched a documentary, A Year in Champagne. He said, "No, but we should get some champagne and watch it tonight." At the end of the movie and the champagne was gone, he kissed her. She said "Finally." acting like it took him a lifetime. Although she claims it was the longest 10 days of her life.
