Like most modern couples today, we met online, and after some wonderful conversation, Raquel just had to find out if it was true that Alex made his own tortillas. Braving the worst snowstorm in years, we met downtown Toronto, the night before Raquel became a Canadian citizen.
After date one, Alex didn't waste anytime and knew that the way to Raquel's heart was through her stomach. We scheduled date three over Valentines day and Alex pulled out all the stops: hand-made chorizo gorditas, surprise traditional Mexican candied limes (he didn't know Raquel loved them) and drinks.
That dinner confirmed Raquel's suspicions, 'this guy feels like home, he makes me feel like I'm at home'. By Easter, our parents had met and were quickly becoming great friends. Fast forward to Christmas 2019, and Alex travelled to Mexico with Raquel's family to celebrate New Years in Oaxaca, Raquel's favourite state in Mexico. For the foodie & history buff in Alex, Oaxaca was heaven and he too, fell in love with Oaxaca's colonial & pre-hispanic architecture, food, traditions, and more.
COVID-19, over a year of lockdowns and quarantines didn't slow anything down. Valentines Day 2021 became even more special with a romantic and unexpected proposal in sweatpants, at home, over one of our traditional luxurious pasta dinners.
We can't wait to celebrate our love with our amazing friends and family in Oaxaca, on February 11, 2022!
