About San Pedro - Ambergris Caye

Belize boasts more than 450 islands along its coastline, known as Cays (pronounced KEYS).

Ambergris stands as the biggest and most frequented island in Belize, and it's a top destination in Central America. Despite this, it maintains a relaxed atmosphere, free from excessive tourist crowds. Surprisingly, for the largest island, it's only about 25 miles long and less than 2 miles wide at its widest point. This compact size makes navigation easy. It has three main roads, and golf carts are the preferred transportation mode for both locals and visitors. You can rent one for as little as $25 a day.

The island is never short of activities, with attractions, nightlife spots, daylife locations, restaurants, shops, and diving and snorkeling sites. The abundant marine life of the Barrier Reef makes it an excellent spot for diving and fishing.

Adapting to life here is straightforward. English is the common language, and the currency exchange rate is 1 USD to 2 BZD. The island vibes are casual and laid back. Only for special occasions like weddings will there be a dress code to follow. You'll feel at home shortly after your arrival.

We were delighted to find out that the wedding is set to occur during lobster season if we're fortunate! During our visit in late July, it was lobster season. We missed the Lobster Fest by a hair, but we did get to savor some truly delicious lobster and fish. Seafood is fresh and incredibly tasty!

What to Do in Belize

Adventure Awaits

Snorkel or Dive the Belize Barrier Reef - day trips to the Reef should not be missed! You will see rays, sharks, turtles, so many fish, and more! There is a dive and snorkle company on the pier of the hotel that will book trips to Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, Mexican Rocks, and other amazing dive spots.

Visit the Blue Hole - either a full day dive trip for experienced divers or you can visit via a helicopter to take in the views from the air. The Great Blue Hole is one big sinkhole that measures about 1000 feet wide and about 400 feet deep. Only experienced divers are able to dive it (minimum 25 dives). As an alternative, there are boat and helicopter tours available.

Secret Beach - take golf carts up to the not so secret beach to relax, eat and drink at picnic tables in the water. This popular beach is a beautiful place to spend the day relaxing in the pristine Caribbean waters. At Secret Beach you will find in-the-water tables so you can sip icy cold drinks without ever leaving the ocean. Several bars and restaurants can also be found in the area, making it a perfect place to stay all afternoon.

Mayan Ruins - so many to see in Belize. Take a day trip to the mainland to see different ruins.

Cave Tubing and Zip Lines - visit Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known as the ATM caves and one of the top sites in Belize. Not for the faint of heart, you will enlist your greatest inner-Indiana Jones to hike through the jungles, wade through rivers, and swim through pools to get to the caves where you will continue hiking in darkness over and under boulders.

Caye Caulker - From San Pedro, take the 30 minute water taxi to the island of Caye Caulker where the motto is “go slow.” This is a small yet vibrant little island with a distinct backpacker / bohemian feel. The entire island can be walked in length between an hour to two, and walking the greatest part of the width only takes about 5 minutes. There are no cars on this island, so the best way to explore is by foot, golf cart, or bike. Caye Caulker is famous for what is known as “The Split” where a hurricane hit in 1961 and divided part of the island into two. Along The Split are a bunch of fun little beach bars where most people staying on or visiting the island will spend most of their time lounging, drinking, and eating

Fishing - lots of options from deep sea to flats fishing.

Where to Eat

Elvi's - our favorite in San Pedro for upscale traditional Belize food. Recommend making a reservation.

El Fogon - Great for lunch or dinner, this casual eatery serves local Belizean comfort foods cooked over firewood. They feature authentic dishes such as escabeche and whole fried fish.

Caramba - Fresh seafood daily! Pick your dinner from what they caught that day as you walk in. Reservation recommended.

Hidden Treasures - Latin American and Caribbean cuisine in a romantic setting.

The Truck Stop - lively shipping container-concept venue with several dining options and a beer garden. Take your pick of pizza, noodles, tacos, and ice cream while enjoying live music, playing games, or taking a dip in the swimming pool around the back.

Palapa Bar - great for lunch or drinks on a pier over the pristine blue ocean water.

Estel’s Dine by the Sea: Some of the best breakfast on the island (served all day.) Be sure to try the famous Belize specialty: fry jacks, which are kind of like a breakfast burritos but better.

Wild Mango’s: For ceviche-lovers this restaurant is the best in town. At Wild Mango’s you will find several different types and styles of ceviche and other great seafood specialties.

Frenchy's - haven't been but on our list!

Here is a great list of restaurants in San Pedro.
