Travel and Things to Do
The Umstead Hotel
This is the closest you can be to the ceremony and reception. The Umstead Hotel is a beautiful five-star property with fine dining on-site and an excellent spa.
Stay here if you want to be as close as possible to the ceremony and reception, or if you'd like to take advantage of the spa and other amenties.
King rooms are available for $369 a night. Call 1-866-877-4141 and ask for the McGuire Stephan-Queen room block before April 27th, 2022 (Limited rooms available at this rate).
Embassy Suites Raleigh Durham
Just a five minute ride from the wedding venue, the Embassy Suites has two-room suites, a complimentary evening reception, and a breakfast buffet. Stay here if you would like a little more room to spread out, just a short ride away from the wedding. There is a courtesy shuttle available to and from the airport. King and double rooms are available for $179 a night; parking is $10 per day. Use our link or call 1-800-362-2779 (1-800-Embassy) and ask for group code SQU by April 28th, 2022. Rooms at this rate may sell out. We will have transporation available for guests who book in our block.
Other Hotels
Other hotels are available nearby; if none of the listed options are a good fit for you, look at options near RDU airport for easy travel and close proximity to wedding events.
To the wedding
We will have valet parking available for our guests at the wedding; we will also have shuttles running between the Embassy Suites and the wedding venue.
Umstead State Park
Beautiful state park just up the street from the wedding venue with multiple great hiking trails.
North Carolina Museum of Art
State-funded art museum with fantastic permanent exhibits and consistent rotation of touring exhibitions. Our favorite part is the park outside--there are several large scale sculptures and pieces to see as you walk the trails here.
Brew Coffee Bar
Coffee shop in downtown Cary inside the Cary Theater. Charming interior, great cold brew, and housemade syrups.
Players' Retreat
Old school sports bar near NC State with the best Scotch selection in North Carolina. You can't go wrong with the sausage dip, chicken tenders (the best!), burgers, hot dogs, steaks, sandwiches, or any appetizer or special on the menu.
Foundation
Underground bar in downtown Raleigh that uses exclusively American made spirits. Cocktail menu changes seasonally with some long-time classics available year round.
Big Ed's Diner
Southern breakfast spot at City Market in downtown Raleigh, just up the street from our old apartment. The biscuits are among the best in town.
Watts and Ward
Speakeasy themed bar in downtown Raleigh with a gorgeous patio. Great spot to grab a beer or a simple drink and enjoy the ambience (heads up: NC has some weird liquor laws that push some bars to operate as "private clubs," so you'll have a $1 membership fee when you first go).
Bittersweet
Dessert and gin bar in downtown Raleigh. Highly recommend the Gin & Jam and the Smores Sundae.
Slims
Dive bar in downtown Raleigh. Drinks are cheap; there may be live music; and there's a pool table upstairs.
Transfer Co Food Hall
Food hall on the edge of downtown Raleigh. Really gorgeous space with a nice patio and great restaurants inside. Check out Burial Brewing (entrance is outside the main hall) for a beer; Benchwarmer's Bagel for a breakfast combo; Mama Crows for a burger and salad; and BulBox for a huge portion of bulgogi (really, all of the vendors are great!).
Sir Walter Coffee
Megan's favorite, favorite coffee shop in downtown Raleigh. Great stop for a morning coffee & breakfast burrito. Comfortable seating and lots of outlets if you need to get some work done. Cocktails available as well. Megan's go-to is a cappucino with macadamia nut milk, but if you want to get really caffeinated, try out the Sir Walter Six.
Hawthorne and Wood
Our favorite: Neighborhood restaurant in Chapel Hill--you can have a laid back meal with a burger on the patio or an upscale dining experience in their beautiful dining room. Menu changes frequently; everything is delicious.
Sunrise Biscuits
Drive-through biscuit and breakfast stop in Chapel Hill--great spot for a chicken biscuit, biscuits and gravy, or a cinnamon roll.
Namu
Biergarten, coffee shop, and Korean restaurant in Durham that we really love. Grab a beer and a bimimbap and go enjoy the garden.
Union Special
Fantastic bakery in Raleigh. We have never had a bad breakfast here. The specials each weekend are always great, each and every pastry slaps, and Megan particularly loves the ham and cheese croissant.
For the wedding
Our wedding attire is formal (black-tie encouraged!). Long dresses, tuxedos, and dark suits preferred.
For Raleigh
In late May, North Carolina is usually pretty warm. Expect highs in the low-to-mid 80s and lows in the 60s. Check the forecast the week of the wedding for rain (it's unlikely that week, though!). Bars and restaurants in Raleigh (including our recommendations) are generally casual.
Can kids attend?
We love your kids, but our wedding is for friends and family 18 and over (except babes in arms). We appreciate you making arrangements ahead of time and leaving the kids at home so you can celebrate with us.
What is the dress code?
Formal attire (black-tie encouraged). Long dresses, tuxedos, or dark suits preferred. Our ceremony will be outdoors on a shaded lawn, and the reception will be indoors.
Is there parking at the wedding venue?
Yes; we will have valet parking included for all guests at our wedding. We will also have a shuttle available for our guests at the Embassy Suites.
When and how should I RSVP?
Please RSVP via the RSVP page on our site by April 21st. Your name will match your invitation, but only enter one person at a time (e.g. if your invitation is for Mickey and Minnie Mouse, just enter "Mickey Mouse" or "Minnie Mouse"). You'll be able to respond for all members of your party.
If you have difficulties logging in, please reach out to us!
What time should I arrive?
We will start shuttles from the Embassy Suites at 4:30pm. For our 5:30 ceremony, we ask that all guests arrive at the venue by 5:15 so they have time to get seated.
Will there be vegan/vegetarian/gluten free options at the reception?
Yes! We have an excellent vegetarian entree option (it was the favorite at our tasting), but please let us know (via your RSVP!) if you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or if you have any other dietary restrictions so we can be sure each course of our reception meal will work for you.
I received a Save the Date, but haven't gotten my invitation yet
We had a host of supply chain and shipping delays on our invitations, and only got them in the mail the second weekend of April. Keep an eye on your mailbox, but feel free to sign into our site for RSVP and more event details. We're excited to see you!
