Alternatively, if you would like to walk,. a cable car connects the historic center of Taormina with its beach area of Mazzarò. The beach of Isola Bella is far about 500m from Mazzarò.

The cable car goes every 15 minutes. The cost is 6 euro one way or 10 euros for round trip. Tickets are not necessary to purchase in advance.

It is then about a 15-20 minute walk from the bottom of the cable car to Lido Tao Beach Club, though be mindful that it is a windy road and there are not sidewalks on the full route.

Lodging Tips

Generally, most hotels and villas/apartments are located either in the main town of Taormina, or along the beaches below.

Town of Taormina:
The town is Taormina is small and walkable and is anchored around Corso Umberto, the bustling main street which contains dozens of shops and restaurants. Look for lodging that indicates it is within a few minutes walking to this main street. If you want to stay closest and most accessible to most of the wedding activities, we recommend staying here. The wedding venue, Hotel Grand Timeo, Belmond, is located just beneath the famous Greek Theatre on the western end of town.

Seaside:

The two beach areas closest to the town of Taormina are Mazzaro Bay and Isola Bella. There are fewer shops and restaurants here, but staying by one of the beaches is a good option if you want a quieter location with more direct beach access. Both are located beneath the town of Taormina and are about a 15 minute drive, or can be accessed via the Taormina Cable Car, which runs every 15 minutes from 8AM – 1:30AM, costs 6EUR one-way/10EUR RT, and takes about 7 minutes. The cable car is located in Mazzaro, though most places whether Mazzaro or Isola Bella are within a 5 – 10 minute walk from there. Additionally, many of the hotels have shuttle services between the beach and the town.

Transportation
Transportation
Getting to Taormina

There are two airports that you can fly into to get to Taormina:

Catania Airport (CTA)
• 45 mins – 1 hour via car
• ~1 hour via train
Palermo Airport (PMO)
• 3.5 hours via car
• 4 – 5 hours via train

Both options have connecting flights from most major airports in Europe that can be accessed with direct flights from the US (i.e. Rome, Milan, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Amsterdam), though neither currently offer direct flights to/from the US. Unless you plan to travel in the eastern part of Sicily before/after the wedding, Catania is recommended, as it is the closer of the two options.

The train station in Taormina, Taormina-Giardini, is located next to the beach beneath the main town area, with cabs easily accessible to the town center. If you plan to travel throughout Sicily before/after the wedding, it can be a good idea to rent a car depending on where you’d like to go, as some of the smaller towns are not connected to the train line. However, many of the main attractions such as Palermo, Catania, Siracusa, and Cefalu are all accessible by train.

Car
There are several taxi companies in Taormina and Catania that you can find online to book a private car in advance (rates usually 80-120EUR one-way depending on size of party). There are also taxis on-site at the airport. The drive is about 45-50 mins to Taormina.

Bus
The bus will take you from the airport right to the main town of Taormina and can be booked easily on Omio or other booking sites, or in person. There is generally one that runs at least every hour during the day, sometimes more frequently. The main operators are Etna Transporti and Interbus. The advantage of the bus over the train is it takes you right into the town, whereas the train station is a bit father. It takes about 1hr 20min from the airport and a one-way ticket is 7EUR. There are several bus stations in the Taormina area, so be sure to book a ticket into the main town station, which is the Terminal Interbus on Via Luigi Pirandello.

Train
The main TrenItalia train line operates the route and can be booked easily on Omio or other booking sites, or in person. The train will leave from the Catania Fontanarossa AIrport station (~10 min walk from terminal) and arrive at the Taormina-Giardini station right outside of town. Note, this will require a ~10-15 min cab ride into town, as the station is beneath the main town area, but there are generally always cabs waiting there at the station, or you can pre-arrange. There are trains that leave just about every hour most days and depending on the time take about 1hr - 1hr30min. A one-way ticket costs about $9. You can book tickets same-day in person or in advance.

Flight Booking Recommendations

We recommend booking flights at least 3-6 months in advance in order to get the best price. If you are planning to use points/miles, one good option to check is point.me, which lets you see available reward booking options based on your itinerary.

It may also be cheaper or easier to book a direct flight into a major hub (i.e. Rome) and then book a separate flight from there into Catania for later that day or a couple days later, particularly if you plan to spend some time elsewhere in Europe before/after the wedding. If you need any assistance or recommendations with flight options, feel free to reach out to us and we are happy to provide input.

Restaurants & Bars
Bambar
Bambar

You cannot let your trip in Sicily pass without having tried granita!

This typical Sicilian dessert (or breakfast) is made of water and typically fresh fruit, coffee, or nuts, which are blended together and frozen. However, a place that serves traditional granita will have their own secrets to creating the perfect version. You can ask them what it is, but don’t expect to find out!

For the ultimate granita experience in Taormina, head to the iconic café that is Bam Bar. This is a Taormina institution that throughout the years has served their famous ‘Granita con brioche’ to pop stars, politicians, and actors known around the world! Lemon is the most traditional flavor, but here at Bam Bar we recommend the peach!

Other flavours typically include almonds, coffee, pistachio, strawberry, and kiwi. Whichever one you choose, make sure to also order a brioche and try dunking torn-off pieces into the ice. Delicious!

Osteria RossoDiVino
Osteria RossoDiVino

Look for the glorious 14th-century townhouse in central Taormina, and you’ll find Osteria RossoDiVino. Outdoor tables occupy a prime spot on its small terrace, under white sunshades. Although it’s an osteria – traditionally a simpler place than an Italian restaurant – the cooking here is sublime. The fresh seasonal ingredients sing in dishes such as seafood spaghetti, seared tuna and anchovy tempura. Additionally, there is a splendid and lengthy regional wine list, including mineral and Grillo wines.

Address: Via de Spuches 8, Taormina

Villa Carlotta Restaurant
Villa Carlotta Restaurant

Villa Carlotta is an exceptional restaurant with amazing views from the terrace overlooking the sea. The menu showcases fresh, local, great quality ingredients. Some absolute stand out dishes: melt in your mouth, Nero D’Avola Filet steak; Swordfish Ravioli; Tuna on a bed of Kiwi & Orange Salad. If you like rose wine, try the Rose di Nere from Noto. The service is excellent and the dishes are beautifully presented.

Address: Via Luigi Pirandello 81, Taormina

Villa Zuccaro Pizzeria
Villa Zuccaro Pizzeria

Villa Zuccaro Pizzeria will charm you with the typical dishes of the Sicilian tradition, prepared every day according to the availability and periodicity of the main ingredients, which are chosen and selected with great care. The effort in the kitchen aims at the rediscovery and enhancement of the art of the past, giving new life to the ancient recipes of folk tradition, so rich in history, scents and authentic flavours.

Besides the main menu, which offers delicious starters and tasty salads, there is a more than ordinary pizza menu, which lets you choose among 50 different flavors. The property, located in a stone villa of the 17th century, is surrounded by a flourishing and verdant garden always carefully maintained.

Location: Piazza Carmine, 5, 98039 Taormina

Morgana Lounge Bar
Morgana Lounge Bar

Morgana is a cozy locale dedicated primarily to those who love to drink well, and is considered by most to be the perfect hideaway for a few hours of pure fun. Every year Morgana sheds its skin in order to mirror our walk through this life. Every journey and new experience is transformed into different elements that find their place in even the smallest of details that make up our display. The greatest inspiration being the land we come from and how our location represents and tells her story through a design concept that is genuine, sincere, and shows who we truly are.

Location: Scesa Morgana, 4, 98039 Taormina ME, Italy

Tischi Toschi
Tischi Toschi

Luca Casablanca, the chef and owner of Tischi Toschi, commands this two-storey trattoria with an idiosyncratic wit, and can be spotted on most nights eating here, accompanied by his diminutive dog. His intelligent menu is a panoply of modern Sicilian fare, from whole artichoke, crisp with just a smattering of flour, to his take on the traditional local aubergine dish caponata, but with almonds and seasoned with a little cocoa powder. Every morsel of pecorino baked with garlic, oregano and parsley was mopped up with bread.

Daiquiri Bar
Daiquiri Bar

Daiquiri is probably one of Taormina’s busiest and most unique bars. And taking up a whole set of steps just off one of the square’s (in front of Villa Zuccaro) you absolutely cannot miss this place. Whilst there is some limited seating on a balcony above the bar, the majority of the seating at Daiquiri is the steps themselves, which are covered with cushions and small tables. Daiquiri has pretty much every cocktail you can think of on the menu, and every type of liquor you can think of (and more) behind the bar. An Aperol spritz costs €9, and whilst you’ll get cheaper spritzes elsewhere, these are exceedingly good. But that’s not all. As is customary in continental Europe, all drinks orders come with a selection of snacks, which usually consist of nuts, crisps and sometimes olives, but at Daiquiri they’ve taken it one step further. Your drinks will arrive with the usual crisps and nuts, and then a few moments later a waiter will bring over a platter of carrot sticks, small sandwiches, bruschetta etc.

Location: Piazzetta Paladini, 4, 98039 Taormina ME, Italy

Trattoria Tiramisú
Trattoria Tiramisú

A family owned restaurant right at the very end of the main high street in Taormina. Their menu is fairly small, compared to some other restaurants in Taormina, but each dish is cooked to perfection. Highly recommended is the Rigatoni alla Norma – large tube shaped pasta with a fresh tomato and aubergine sauce topped with grated baked ricotta – this dish is a favourite in Sicily and this is definitely the best version of it in Taormina. Also be sure to try a bottle of Sicilian Grillo, a gorgeous white wine grown in vineyards on the hills of Etna (and only €16 a bottle!!!!!), not forgetting their famous tiramisu!
