Covid times

Hi all! Siobhan here- This wedding planning craic gets easier the third time around!

We appreciate our family and friends' patience and well wishes as we have tried to figure out our wedding. Both Martin and I have always wanted a big wedding and covid just did not allow for that to happen.  And it certainly did not make for any easy planning or forecasting.

Come hell or high water I'm gonna marry that man on the 16th June. We hope that you can be there to join us.

On the plus side, Martin will never get abuse for forgetting his anniversary.

It’s the 13th of February 2016 and the nerves are starting to set in. Myself and my dance partner Ann have been practicing for months to compete in a local fundraiser for a Youth GAA Club, Dancing for Our Stars at Gaelic Park. Little did I know, I was going to have a very important set of eyes watching me from the crowd that night… my jiving skills must have really impressed.

It wasn’t until the day after as the victory celebrations were continuing with a big gang of us in Catherine McCormack’s kitchen that I set eyes on Siobhan and thought to myself, who is this beautiful girl? We all started playing drinking games and I decided I was going to play it cool and see what happens. After about 10 minutes, the cool factor went out the window and I started chatting to her. I thought everything was going well and decided to ask Siobhan for her number. She gave it to me and I told her I would text her.

The next day I decided I would text Siobhan and after about 20 attempts on deciding what I would say, I finally hit the send button. Immediately, I received a response and it wasn’t the one I was looking for… “This number is no longer in service”. I couldn’t believe it…she had given me a fake number.

A few days passed and when I logged into Facebook I saw a friend request from Siobhan Higgins. I decided I would accept and sent her a message calling her out. Siobhan claims to this day that it was my error- that I typed her number into my phone wrong. I was only off by one digit, so it’s debatable on whether she gave the number that way on purpose or that I had one beer too many and typed it in incorrectly. Jury is still out on that one.

Siobhan tried her hand at playing it cool for a while and I didn’t know if she was really interested. At this point, I knew I was up for a challenge…

We ended up meeting again in Vaughan’s one Sunday night and spent the night chatting away (…she hasn’t stopped since) going into the early hours at Teasers and ending up at the renowned Taco Burrito King. A few weeks later, I decided to ask Siobhan out to a Cubs game.

Siobhan told me about a year later that my cousin Kevin had pulled her aside at Gaelic Park the Sunday before and told her I would be asking her out and that she should accept. “Sure Siobhan, nothing serious like, just go on with him to the Cubs game ‘forra bitta craic’”.

From that time forward, myself and Siobhan started meeting up for drinks every Tuesday night for Trivia at Pints Bar in Elmhurst. That progressed into getting a bit more sophisticated and going out for Dinners and Date Nights, and eventually getting to know each other and becoming a couple.

From the first time that I laid eyes on Siobhan, I knew that there was something special about her. She has become my best friend, companion, and I can’t imagine my life without her.

We are very excited to celebrate our next step with all of our close family and friends and hope that all of you will celebrate with us as we enter into the next chapter of our lives.
