Our story, as told by Brendan

Fittingly, Lindsey and I met in a classic New York setting — on the 31st floor of the old Time & Life building at 1271 Sixth Avenue. I had recently started a new job there, working as an editor for GOLF Magazine. It was only a few weeks into the job that I first noticed Lindsey, who worked on the 32nd floor as an account manager for Sports Illustrated. To say the absolute least, she stood out. I was so struck by the aura of Lindsey’s beauty — her dark, flowing hair straight out of a magazine and a face like I had only dreamed about — that I couldn’t help but wonder ‘what would it take to get someone THAT far out of my league to talk to me?’

From there, fate took over.

Lindsey and I were soon introduced by Sean Zak, a colleague (and now a close mutual friend) who I shared a cubicle with at the time. Every few days, Lindsey would show up at the cubicle Sean and I shared, empty Clemson coffee mug in hand, claiming the coffee machine on her floor was broken. A half hour later, we’d be deep in conversation (sorry, Sean, for the endless distractions). Needless to say, I made sure the coffee machine on Lindsey’s floor never got fixed.

Lindsey and I quickly got to know each other through work happy hours, G chat conversations, and paper cups of after-hours wine at one of our desks. All we had in common quickly became apparent: a focus on God & family, a love for sports (“fan” doesn’t come close to describing Lindsey’s relationship with Clemson football), and fascination with New York City — not to mention a unique appreciation for the brands we were lucky enough to represent, Sports Illustrated & GOLF.

At the same time our relationship began to blossom, Lindsey and I started working more closely together. I jumped from the editorial side to GOLF’s marketing team as Lindsey ascended the corporate structure at Time Inc. Sooner than later, we were both heavily involved in almost every GOLF & SI ad deal. As sneaky as we thought we were, our relationship was no secret.

In 2017, we both left Time Inc. for greener pastures — me to Inc. Magazine and Lindsey to a boutique marketing agency with luxury real estate clients. That departure didn’t last long; after lots of deliberation and prayer, Lindsey and I both returned to GOLF in summer 2018 (now under new ownership) where we have remained to this day, working alongside one another on LOTS of projects.

For most couples, working that closely is simply not possible. But for Lindsey and I? Nothing has ever felt more natural — and we don’t ever take that blessing for granted.

We were engaged on May 11, 2019, at what has become one of our favorite places on earth — Sea Island. From Sandy Hook, NJ to Watch Hill, RI, Lindsey and I are never far from a beach, as many of you know. And this is why we’ve chosen to celebrate with you at the casually gorgeous Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club. See you there, for what’s sure to be a memorable night!

Our story, as told by Lindsey

Contrary to popular belief, the coffee machine on my floor really did break. Annoying, but I thought that inconvenience gave me a good excuse to visit my friend Sean on the GOLF Magazine editorial floor and to get a peak at his new, elusive desk-mate. In an effort to grow my happy hour social circle at work, I'd been asking Sean for weeks to invite the new hire to eat lunch with us. Despite his efforts, Sean said he always declined that offer in order to stay focused on work...he ate at his desk, instead. Ugh, no fun.

After filling up my Clemson mug, I headed that way. Brendan's position in the cubicle they shared was facing away from me as I approached, but he turned when he sensed someone coming. Upon seeing him, I was immediately struck with butterflies...a feeling that I'm happy to report has not gone away since. Sorry, Sean, but I totally forgot you were even there in that moment. I couldn't tell you what I said next because I was so distracted by how handsome I thought Brendan was, but I do know that I've never been more thankful for a broken appliance in my life.

From there, we began what became a deep and meaningful friendship (brimming with mutual attraction, but also mitigated by apprehension because we were colleagues). I looked forward to work every day because I knew he'd be there. As our professional roles flourished and intertwined, we realized that our skills were almost perfectly complementary. His strengths were my weaknesses, and vice versa. This gave us the opportunity to make up plenty of excuses for meetings, check-ins, regroups, catch-ups...you name it. As I got to know Brendan at work, I developed a tremendous respect for his work ethic (it now made sense why he skipped social lunches to prove himself in his new role) and his integrity. Work conversations turned into life conversations over shared bottles of red wine after-hours at our desks, and that's when I got to know Brendan's heart -- his love for his family and our shared faith. He got up the nerve to ask me on a proper date, and after a few of those, we figured out that this was the real deal.

I could go on for pages about this man and everything he now means to me, but I'll save it for you to witness for yourselves come September 4th, 2021. He's been my colleague, my best friend, and now he's my co-worker again, but I'm most excited to make him my husband. See you there!
