Please Log inHappy Minyan - It's a Great Mitzvah to Always be Happy
Join us at the incomparable Happy Minyan for Shabbat and see why we're traveling across the country to spend the Shabbat before our wedding at this little shul with the most gigantic, happy heart you've ever experienced.
Dressy Casual
Happy Minyan is a Modern Orthodox synagogue. That said, please wear whatever you would wear to your own shul or church. Lara prefers to cover her shoulders and wear dresses when attending. Pery opts for button down shirts and slacks. That said, this shul is not a place where people are paying attention to what you're wearing - you're bound to see hippies praying next to black hatters, and women in pants dancing hand-in-hand with women in sheitels. So be comfortable! Be happy!
Shabbat Morning Schedule
9:00AM Pesukim v'Zimrot
9:20AM Chazan Begins Services
10:20AM Pery's Ufruf! The Torah Reading Begins (Approximately)
We'll have candy for the tossing!
What's an Ufruf?
On the Shabbat before the wedding, it is custom for the groom to receive an aliya, aka: be called up to the reading of the Torah. This is called an Ufruf, which literally means "calling up." When a man marries, his commitment to Torah increases and deepens. Judaism and Torah are not the same for a single person as they are for one who is married. The groom is called to the Torah to denote his new commitment to Judaism and Torah.
The bride and groom are like a king and queen on their wedding day! So expect a lot of singing, throwing of nuts and candy, and many mazal tov dances!
There will be a tasty kiddish after services.
