SACRED VOWS: INDIAN WEDDING CEREMONY

After the joyous Haldi and Sangeet celebrations, join us for the heart of our wedding festivities: the traditional Indian wedding ceremony.

In Indian culture, the wedding ceremony is a sacred event where the bride and groom exchange vows and are blessed by family and friends. This ceremony involves various rituals, including the Saat Phere (seven sacred vows around the holy fire), symbolizing their commitment to each other. The vibrant and colorful atmosphere, filled with the fragrance of flowers and the sound of traditional music, creates an unforgettable experience.

We invite you to witness and be a part of this beautiful tradition as we celebrate the union of the couple. Bring your heartfelt blessings and immerse yourself in the spiritual and cultural richness of the ceremony. A vegetarian lunch will be served.

Pro Tip: Indian ceremonies are long, and you are not expected to sit and watch for the full ceremony. Please wander around and enjoy food and activities during the ceremony. We will call you back at the big moments!

On a practical note, please ensure you bring your ID to all events and anticipate security checks.

Schedule

10:00am - 11:00am: Baraat (meet in front of the Reagan Building on 14th st, all guests welcome to participate)
11:00am - 1:00pm: Ceremony (Ronald Reagan Building, Atrium)

WHAT IS A BARAAT

A Baraat is a celebratory wedding procession for the groom involving live music and dancing.  The procession signifies an age-old tradition of the groom who would travel an average of five to seven days to his bride's home. Nowadays, the baraat is condensed to up to an hour of dancing and celebration.  All are welcome to participate!

WHAT TO WEAR

Traditional Indian outfits are strongly encouraged, but formal Western attire is also welcome. Please avoid pure white and black, along with red. Red is the color traditionally worn by Indian brides.

For women, options range from saris to lehengas to kurtas and anarkalis. Have fun with the outfit and jewelry!

For men, the main two traditional Indian items are Kurta Pajamas and Sherwanis, but there are a number of other traditional options if you prefer.

If you need some pointers on where to shop, here are some sites for both men and women. Double-check their return policies; sometimes quality can be hit-or-miss with these sites.
