Getting Around Cape Town
Uber is widely used in South Africa and is safe to use, safer than hailing a taxi. Use your hotel or restaurant WiFi to do that before walking out onto the street.
Local currency
The South African rand is the official currency of the Republic of South Africa. It's abbreviated to ZAR.
Revolut
We strongly recommend that you download the app Revolut and order a physical card.
Revolut is a debit card which can be used in most countries worldwide. While using revolut abroad, you do not pay exchange rate fees. You can buy rand prior to your trip and have it saved away in a different account.
Weather
The weather in South Africa in March stays around 22°C to 27°C throughout the day. The nighttime temperature drops down to 14°C and you will need light warm clothes.
Safety in South Africa
Tourist areas and poorer areas attract pick pockets, just like anywhere else. You should be careful when using ATMs and always keep your belongings close. It is also a good idea to take an Uber instead of walking, particularly at night after 7pm. It is recommended that you download Uber prior to arriving in South Africa. Regarding property crime, you should take precautions such as not leaving valuables in your car and keeping your hotel room locked. Some locals may offer or deliberately help you cross the road or wash your windscreen for example. They will expect payment in return. It is good to have small coins for those situations such as 1 rand (0.057 cent)
Load shedding
Load shedding requires switching off parts of South Africa's electric grid in a planned and controlled manner due to insufficient capacity or to avoid a countrywide blackout. It began in 2007 and continues to the present day. It does not effect hotels and restaurants. It will effect those in b&b's and apartments. It will mean you may be without power for a period of hours. Schedules are available online, although they are not the easiest to follow!!
