Things to Do

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is local, beautiful, and FREE!

There are some really fantastic exhibits, including Virginia artists, collections from Paris in the 1900s, and Photography exhibits featuring Black photographers.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

About 7 miles from Richmond, you can catch beautiful blooms, and fun exhibits.

Maymont Park

Free and activities for kids and adults alike :)

Maymont used to be the sprawling home of wealthy Richmond residents James Henry and Sallie May Dooley (the estate name comes from combining Mrs. Dooley’s maiden name and the French word for hill). Upon their deaths, they left their home and its grounds to the city. Now, this 100-acre property is one of the top activities for Richmond travelers. The Japanese gardens are a particular highlight, but Maymont also boasts a carriage collection, a petting zoo, a nature center and an arboretum, not to mention a truly spectacular and well-maintained 12,000-square-foot, 33-room mansion.

Edgar Allen Poe Museum

The Poe Museum began over a century ago when Edgar Allan Poe collector and researcher James Howard Whitty and a group of literary enthusiasts met in Poe’s hometown of Richmond, Virginia to create the state’s first monument to a writer. The Museum has enjoyed a history as unique as the author it honors.

The Poe Museum’s collection is now the most comprehensive in the world and its programs reach thousands of scholars, students, teachers and literary enthusiasts every year.

James River Park- Belle Isle

Belle Isle is the park’s most popular site, attracting people of all ages to the wooded paths, mountain biking trails, bicycle skills area, historical sites, wheelchair-accessible fishing at the quarry pond, good sunbathing and the granite wall for rock climbing.
