Darsita and Jay first met in 2007 at the Greater Baltimore Temple. It was Jay and Darsita’s favorite season, Garba season. Darsita was there with her cousins and Jay came with his family. Although they had both been going to temple since they were very young, they had miraculously never met before.
Jay was friends with Darsita’s cousin’s so when it came time to find partners for raas, they saw each other and struck up a conversation and immediately hit it off. Jay thought Darsita was beautiful, fun-loving, energetic, and compassionate. Darsita thought Jay was witty, sporty, and always trying to make others laugh.
For three long years, Jay and Darsita would meet at garba/mandir events. Jay tried to drop every hint in the book just to get Darsita to look at him. He would save his best jokes for when he knew she was listening, sit next to her whenever he could, and would take her hair clip every chance he got because he knew just how much it annoyed her.
Darsita was completely clueless that Jay liked her. Darsita never realized that all the attention was something more, but she always secretly hoped. She would call Jay throughout the year just to see how his day was and she would look forward to any event she knew he was going to be at.
After years of dropping hints, Jay decided to tell her, but he had to be sure she liked him back. Darsita and Jay used to talk on Facebook chat regularly so one day he sent her a message. He asked if she liked anyone. Darsita didn’t really know how to respond so she vaguely said “I might, do you?” Jay took a chance and said “yes, I do”. Being curious but neither wanting to be forward and just say it, they danced around the question for an hour until Jay finally said “I Like You”. The rest is history.
Fast forward eight years to Christmas dinner at Jay’s house with his family and Darsita’s family.
Everyone had finished eating dinner and the kids were all playing board games in the basement. Darsita had to go upstairs for a few minutes when her mom called her. After a few minutes her sister cames upstairs to tell her that Jay wanted to see her downstairs. She went downstairs to find Jay standing in the middle of the room. She looked around and saw that they were the only ones there. Jay hands her a present and tells her it is her Christmas present. Darsita opens it up to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Price book.Jay tells Darsita to open the book. She opened the book which opened to the chapter “The Unbreakable Vow” and there was a cutout with a ring inside. Darsita looks up to see Jay on one knee and he asks her if she would make the unbreakable vow with him and marry him.
She said yes
