They say that “the friends that you make in college are the friends you make for life.” This is true but Chioma is so much more than that. She is the sister I never knew I was missing. We met during our very first math class at Northeastern and since then we have shared a lot of incredible and special moments throughout college and beyond. We have been best friends, roommates, and we’ve been each other’s rocks through the good and bad times. I also have the distinct honor and privilege of being a godmother to her daughter Adaora. I couldn’t imagine getting married without her and I am so honored to have her stand with me as I marry my heart and my future husband.
My thoughtful, kind, and inquisitive friend who completely embodies the definition of her name and when you are around her - you can’t help but feel like you have spent a perfect day in the sun. We met at Northeastern, we were roommates, and we have been very close friends ever since. Soleil has always been so incredibly positive and supportive of me in everything that I’ve ever done. I am incredibly blessed to call her a friend and to have her stand beside me as my maid of honor.
Ms. June Handy and I met a few years ago through the Significant Women’s small group at our former church Bethel AME. We connected over our passion for helping others and our heart for the homeless population. In the few years that we have been friends, I have learned so much from her about what it truly means to be selfless and to constantly put others first. She is the definition of “black girl magic” and is an inspiration to me every day. I am so thankful that she will be a part of our special day and even more thankful that I get to call her a dear friend.
Not only did God hear and answer my prayer for a little sister but He gave me two at the same time (my sisters are twins). MJ has been an absolute gift to me. I am in constant awe of the person that she has become and I am blessed that I have been able to witness the development of her resilient, grounded, wonderfully soulful, and empathetic spirit. She has the biggest heart of anyone that I know and her ability to love and to care for others is unmatched. I am so grateful to be able to walk this life with her as my sister and I can’t wait to share this special day with her.
When I was around five years old, I used to pray to God everyday that He would give me a baby sister. When Monique was born and as she grew, I always thought about what I would teach her as an older sister but I had no idea how much I would learn from her. She is tenacious, ambitious, ridiculously smart, and has an incredible capacity to love. My heart is always so full whenever I get to spend even the briefest moment with her. She is the realization of a five year old’s fervent prayer. I am so blessed that she is my sister and that she will be beside me on our special day and beyond.
I still remember the very first time that I met Lindsey. We were both new to our school and it was the first day of our freshman orientation hiking trip. In a room full of anxious kids, we somehow gravitated towards each other, said hello, and over the course of that week became fast friends. I had no idea on that first day that the girl that I sat next to on the bus to Mount Katadin, with a genuine and compassionate heart, would become one of my forever friends and my heart is full of gratitude that she is. I am delighted that she will be standing with me when I marry my forever.
