Where?
Castelo de Alcácer do Sal, Portugal.
The wedding celebrations will take place in a medieval castle that overlooks the small Portuguese town of Alcácer do Sal.
Castelo de Alcácer do Sal
7580-197 Alcácer do Sal
Portugal
The castle is within walking distance of the entire town and is a very quiet and relaxing area with lots of quaint little bars and eateries.
The castle is built upon a medieval crypt, has a pool, free parking and is nestled on a ridge overlooking the town and Setúbal countryside.
Alcácer do Sal
Graciously laid out over the right bank of the Sado river in the province of Setúbal a wander around Alcácer do Sal reveals the most charming aspects of the city, with its alleys and stairways leading up to the castle.
About Alcacer do Sol
Alcacer do Sol is a beautiful little town, that's easy to walk around (although there are some steep hills!). Please take some time to look around, there are loads of cafes/restaurants in the centre.
Food and drink is pretty cheap in Alcacer! (we're talking 5 euros for 3 beers and a pastry here...).
There is also a Spar (among other shops) close to the castle for any last minute essentials you may need or have forgotten to bring with you.
Get to Lisbon first...
Those travelling from Ireland will need to fly out of Dublin Airport to Lisbon Airport, the closest airport in Portugal to the venue.
Lisbon Airport is 7km from Lisbon city centre, if you wish to check out this beautiful city before and/or after the wedding, we highly recommend that you do!
The airport is 90 km away (roughly a 50min drive) from Alcacer do Sal. See the route. Please note: this route includes tolls so please include this in your car hire to avoid additional options (there should offer it to you when hiring)
Car hire
You can hire cars from Lisbon airport: Avis, Europcar, Sixt Rent a Car, Goldcar, and ACE Rent a car are all beside the Terminal 1.
Tips for car hire in Portugal
Don’t
- Take the car hire companies insurance policy, it is usually ridiculously expensive due to high excess charges – we advise you to get a separate policy (or check your travel insurance covers car hire)
Do
- Take the toll token when hiring - as you will cross tolls on the way to the castle
- Choose a good mileage option – some company offer limited mileage at the desk and then charge you for extra distance ( you will cover at least 200km to/from the castle)
- Choose the full to full fuel (if hiring from the airport there is a petrol station off the roundabout beside the airport)
Taxi
We have been advised of the following taxi.
https://taxitours.pt/taxi-transfers/
They all speak English.
They can make the travel to and from Lisbon (most taxis company only go from Lisbon to Alcacer and then you have to pick up another one in Alcacer to return to Lisbon and as it is a little village, they do not speak english).
The price is 152 €, one-way. You have to pay 50% on reservation.
If the flight is delayed, they wait.
They pick you up at the airport (I believe inside the airport, but you can speak with them in English through the website contact number).
Bus
There is a bus (line 8559) that runs from Alcacer do Sal to Lisbon (Gare do Oriente)
The trip takes 1h30 mins (based off the timetable we’ve been given)
If you fancy the bus we can send you the timetable
Airbnb, hotels and villas!
There are lots of places nearby, please check out our top recommendations below:
Hotel Rural da Barrosinha - mention our wedding when booking and they will give you a room rate of 88 euros per night (Found that the easiest thing was to email them hotelrural@herdadedabarrosinha.pt)
Montalvo Estate - Tourist Village - lovely selection of apartments and villas (16km from Castle)
There are also lots of options on air bnb , just make sure you choose somewhere within the Alcacer do Sol area if you want to be able to walk to the castle!
Go for more than just the wedding
If this was someone else's wedding, we'd probably treat it like a city break to Lisbon. Having spent a week there in 2019, there's plenty to see and do in the ancient and beautiful city. It's also the most reasonably priced European capital we've ever visited (yes, it's cheaper than Berlin!)
