A UNESCO World Heritage site nestled at the base of the Guanajuato Mountains, San Miguel de Allende is the crown jewel of Spanish colonial towns in Mexico.
With a rich history in the arts, it is a fitting description to say that San Miguel is a canvas filled with colored homes, cobblestone streets, and incredible churches.
Founded in the early 1500s and named for a friar (Juan de San Miguel) and Ignacio Allende, a patriot who lost his life for Mexican independence, San Miguel de Allende gained notoriety in the early 1900s as foreign artists, including U.S. soldiers studying art on the GI Bill, were attracted by the unique architecture, climate, and culture as well as the institutes that were opening.
Today, San Miguel's economy relies heavily on tourism as adventurers from all of the over world come to enjoy unadulterated Mexico as they walk the narrow streets in search of hidden restaurants, cantinas, and boutiques.
