Gorchivo!

"Горчиво!" /gorchivo/ means "bitter" in Bulgarian and this is a signal that the newlyweds should sweeten the moment with a kiss!

It is the Spanish equivalent of "¡Que se besen, que se besen!" so feel comfortable using both. :)

Reception Entrance

It is at the beginning of the reception that both mothers meet the new family. A white cloth is laid along the path of the newlyweds, symbol of health, happiness, and purity in their new life together.

A symbol of joining the couple’s families is held where the two mothers-in-law feed the bride and the groom with small pieces of bread dipped in salt and honey as a gesture to welcome them into their families and wish them a sweet life.

Shortly afterwards an interesting ritual of guessing the sex of the couple’s first child is held. Here, the bride kicks a small bucket containing water, a white flower, and a red flower. If the white flower goes further, the first child will be a boy. If the red flower goes further, the first child will be a girl.

Breaking the "pitka" (bread)

A beautiful Bulgarian tradition is the "Breaking of the bread". The newlyweds stand with their backs against each other, and the mother of the bride places the ritual bread above their heads. At a special signal, the newlyweds both try to divide it into two and get the bigger chunk.

The tradition says that whoever breaks the bigger part of the bread he will be in charge of the new family and that this will be the first and last time the newlyweds turn their back on each other.

Cutting the cake

Just before serving the cake, it is a Spanish tradition for the newlyweds to cut the cake for the guests.

This is made with a massive sword and honestly... we have no idea why... but why not?!
