Sarah's Story - It was unseasonably warm in Moab for a late October day. I remember taking in the views, and feeling a little irritated that Kyle seemingly wasn't appreciating the scenery. I now know his mind was focused on something else, his eyes scanning the horizon hoping to spot the secret photographer. I now know he purposely wore sunglasses so I didn’t see him cry. When it came time to get on one knee, overcome with emotion, all he could say was “will you.” I laughed because I knew he wasn't going to elaborate. He was adorably nervous. He pulled this off flawlessly, and I was so proud of him. The whole day was perfect, and I knew everyday after this one would be as well.

Kyle's Story - Stay tuned. He is busy writing a literary masterpiece, I'm sure of it.

Why Ireland?

If you aren't a history buff, skip over this part.

If you're still here, before you start reading, you must know there are two sides to this story: The Schmidt side and the Starr side. These are their stories (DON DON)

Schmidt Story:

Our family story starts in Ramelton, Donegal County in North Ireland in the 16th century. The Presbyterian settlers of Ralmelton left England and Scotland to escape the tyranny of the rule of Charles I. Fast forward to Ireland 1798. A lad named Andrew McMurry married his next door neighbor Sarah Stewart. They didn't have any kids so he ditched her and ran away to the states. He ended up in Philadelphia and married a woman named Eleanor Stevenson. They had 7 children, one of them being Thomas McMurry. As an adult, Thomas moved to Colorado in 1886 as a special agent for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was the second President of the Denver Real Estate Exchange, President of the Denver School Board, served on the Colorado Board of Education and was elected Mayor of Denver in 1895 and again in 1898. During his tenure, he started the Denver Zoo. He died in 1918 having two daughters, but no sons. Thus the McMurry name discontinued, but where the Schmidt name begins. One of Andrew's daughters met John Marshall Jr. (Sarah's great-great-grandfather) in Denver, and got married in 1896. They had a daughter as well, Eleanor Margaret Marshall, who married Walter A. Schmidt. Eleanor and Walter had a son Marshall Schmidt (my grandfather) born in 1926, who had Sarah's dad John Marshall Schmidt born in 1952, which leads to Sarah in 1991!

Sarah's great, great grandfather, John Marshall Jr. (same John Marshall Jr. from above) was born in Glasgow in 1867. At five years old, John was wearing the Scottish kilt that Sarah is wearing in this picture when he came to the US in 1871.

Starr Story:

I'm sure Kyle has some Irish in him too...
