Other options
While there are a ton of hotels and vacation homes in the greater Hood River area, it's an incredibly busy tourist and wedding destination in the summer. Airbnbs are an option to book early. Hotels are more complicated, and may fill up suddenly as rooms are released to the public. Please do your research and don't assume you'll be able to book something last minute.
The closest airport to Hood River, Oregon is the Portland International Airport. It's about an hour away. Rental cars are available.
Fun fact: Travel & Leisure magazine has ranked the Portland airport the #1 domestic airport for 9 years in a row!
Currently there is NO Uber or Lyft servicing The Gorge because it’s too remote. Gorge Taxi Service is the local taxi option providing service in and around the Hood River area. You can also book them as an airport shuttle or a wine tour!
Hiking
Springtime hikes in the Gorge are becoming a tradition for us! Check out the AllTrails website to explore your options for a big adventure. A few to consider:
Latourell Falls Loop (2 miles, 45 mins from Hood River, pretty easy)
Tamanawas Falls (3.5 miles, 30 mins from Hood River, medium difficult)
Angel's Rest (4.5 miles, 40 mins from Hood River, difficult)
For just a taste, Indian Creek is a great option right in the town of Hood River.
Vista House
Drive up to the Vista House for incredible views of the Columbia River. This is a great place to take in the scenery of the region and snap some photos.
Multnomah Falls
If you are driving to Hood River from Portland or the Portland Airport during the day you will see Multnomah Falls in all her glory on your drive down I-84. Multnomah Falls claims to be the #1 natural tourist attraction in the Pacific Northwest and for good reason. It's beautiful!
If you'd like to visit, you will need to pre-purchase a parking reservation for $2. This area can get busy so if you think you'd like to go, I'd suggest making the reservation in advance.
Mt. Hood Railroad
Mount Hood Railroad is a century-old, short line railroad offering scenic passenger excursions through Northern Oregon. It offers 2 1/2 hour round-trip excursions that travel through orchards, vineyards, and forests enjoying picture-perfect views of snow-capped Mt. Hood and capturing the nostalgia of classic American train travel along the way. Fun for kids and adults!
Wine tasting
The Columbia Gorge wine region spans both the Oregon and Washington side of the Columbia River. If you only have time for one, Mt. Hood Winery is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. For a directory of wineries in the area visit the Columbia Gorge Winery Association website.
Guided tours
Hire a guide to take you on a wine, beer, hiking or waterfall tour! The general manager at Westcliff Lodge recommended Martin's Gorge Tours.
Brewery hopping
The Columbia Gorge is home to many of Oregon’s greatest breweries. If you’ve only got time for one, we recommend pFriem, which has won dozens of awards around the world for its beers and has a beautiful taproom.
