One of our favorite places to visit! Whether it's hiking, climbing, or sightseeing you cannot miss a trip to Smith Rock State Park (Visit Smith Rock). Located just 30 minutes north of Bend and 15 minutes from Redmond Airport.
Though we will just miss the Perseids Meteor Shower (ends August 26), the Observatory at Sunriver is an awesome place to visit during the day and during the night. Attend a Solar Viewing, Naturalist talk, or one of the other cool events hosted!
Another favorite is hiking the Green Lakes Trail. Located about 30 min from Sunriver, this 8 mile hike features waterfalls, lakes, and some of the most spectacular scenery in Central Oregon.
Located in the Newberry Caldera, this one-mile trail walks you through the youngest lava flow in Oregon. (Obsidian Flow Hiking Trail)
Lava Cast Forest
Also located within the Newberry Caldera, the Lava Cast Forest showcases an eruption from about 6,000 years ago. You'll see casts of trees that were covered in lava on this paved trail. (Lava Cast Forest Trail)
Lava River Cave
Make sure you bring a jacket and a light to see this one-mile long lava tube. Only 10 minutes from Sunriver, this self-guided tour takes about 1.5 hours. (Lava River Cave)
Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park
Should you be in the mood for a bit of a road trip, Crater Lake is an absolute MUST see. About 2 hours from Sunriver, Crater Lake is Oregon's only National Park and the deepest-lake in the US.
