A little tourism guide for those wanting to explore more of Argentina
If you have 2-3 days
Iguazu:
A 2 hour flight to the north, in the border triangle of Argentina, Brazil, and Parguay, lie the Iguazu falls – one of the new 7 wonders of the world. This is one of Argentina’s main tourist attractions and a great option if you don’t have too much time and want to see something other than Buenos Aires.
Tigre:
30km away from the city centre and easily reached by train or taxi lies the Tigre Delta. If you want to escape Buenos Aires for a more relaxed and quiet atmosphere or are looking for somewhere to fully cure your hangover this is the place. You can rent your own bungalow or a room in one of the bed & breakfast hotels that lie along the many arms of the Parana River. Boats to the various locations leave from Tigre harbor in the (early) morning and usually pick you up for your return journey in the afternoon.
Where to stay: La Becasina, Delta Eco Spa, La Morada, Alpenhaus
If you have 5 days or more:
Salta:
Salta and its surroundings have many things to offer. You can head north and see the salt lakes and the multicoloured “quebrada de humahuaca” stone formations. In the south lies Cafayate, the centre of one of Argentina’s largest wine producing regions. The majority of vineyards are located in the town centre making it a great options for wine tasting or two.
Mendoza:
Mendoza is one of the great wine regions of the world, and hence one of the best places to drink wine and enjoy it with good food and company. Surrounded by the Andes Mountains, its more than 1500 wineries spread out through the three main wine regions - Lujan de Cuyo, Valle de Uco and Maipú. The wineries range from small, family owned and cozy, to large production modern architectural masterpieces.
Calafate:
El Calafate is one of the busiest tourist destinations during this time of the year so it would be a good idea to book early should you choose to head down south. El Calafate is over 2,000km south of Buenos Aires and closer to Antarctica than the capital. In and round El Calafate you will have the opportunity to see the Perrito Moreno glacier and take a glacier cruise in the Lago Argentino. Alternatively, you can head south to Chile and visit the Torres del Paine national park. Another option is to head north to El Chalten which offers several hiking routes that explore Mount Fitzroy and its glacial lagoons.
