About Carmel

We picked Carmel-by-the-Sea (aka Carmel) as our homebase because it's a charming, walkable town with a ton of activities nearby. Carmel was founded as an artists' colony more than 100 years ago, and it's retained its heritage as a quirky, artistic town ever since. There's a little something for everyone, whether you want to stroll on Carmel Beach, sip wine at one of Carmel's 20+ tasting rooms, explore the shops and galleries on Ocean Avenue, check out the town's quirky cottage architecture, or relax at a local cafe or inn. Carmel is a bit unconventional. Did you know...

• Clint Eastwood is the former mayor (1986-1988) and has lived there for decades?

• Carmel's municipal code requires a permit to wear heels >2 inches high? Don't worry, it's not enforced.

• No chain restaurants are allowed downtown?

• It is known as one of the most dog-friendly towns in the U.S., thanks in large part to Doris Day, a former resident with a passion for pooches? (As a result, Cubbie will be joining all the festivities!)

• It has no parking meters, street signs, or neon lights?

• Downtown Carmel's buildings have no street addresses; instead, they're identified by their names and cross streets?

• There are 41 secret courtyards and passageways in Carmel?

While Carmel can get touristy in summer, we'll avoid the crowds by convening in April, although that means it may be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so bring extra layers.

Forge in the Forest
Junipero Street & SW Corner of 5th Ave.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93921
United States

Please join us at Forge in the Forest for our Rehearsal Dinner. The event is guaranteed to include a roast of Richard and some glowing reflections on Liz. Forge in the Forest is a mixed indoor/outdoor venue, but all dinner mingling and seating space is outdoors. There will be heat lamps and fires for warmth but we recommend bringing an extra layer in case it gets chilly at night.

Some history... “The Forge” moved to its present location on the corner of 5th and Junipero in 1944, when master builder Hugh W. Comstock constructed the current Forge at a cost of $1,200 for Francis Whitaker, another artist, and a master blacksmith.

Mr. Whitaker used The Forge to produce much of the hand-wrought hardware (hinges, door latches, sign holders, etc.) that still adorns many of the historic buildings in Carmel.

Artist and writer Henry Miller and the internationally renowned writer, John Steinbeck were frequent visitors who met with other locals inside The Forge, to drink, tell stories and talk. The Grapes of Wrath novel was reported to have been inspired inside The Forge as a result of one such meeting.

In the fall of 1970, The Forge was then converted into a restaurant and saloon.

Attire is dressy casual.

Hike at Point Lobos

About 10 minutes by car from Carmel, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is great for sightseeing and hiking on the cliffs along the ocean. There are many hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. After 10am, parking can be challenging and trails can get busy, so we recommend going early in the morning. Grab an Uber or partner up with a guest from San Francisco with a car and head out for some amazing views and a wonderful morning hike!

Rent a Bike and Cycle around Carmel

Visit Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop to rent a bike or an e-bike so you can cruise around Carmel and its environs. It's located on the SW Corner of Ocean Ave and Mission St. Happy cycling!

Walk on Carmel Beach

Take a walk on Carmel Beach. Just keep walking down to the end of Ocean Ave and you'll hit the beach. You can walk along the Scenic Bluff Path parallel to the beach or head down into the sand.

Visit Mission Carmel

Built in 1797, this is one of the most authentically restored Roman Catholic mission churches in California and is a National Historic Landmark. It is 1 mile from central Carmel-by-the-Sea, so it's walkable. You can visit the historic site, museum and store starting at 11:30am on Sundays.

Shop on Ocean Avenue

Shop for stuff to fill that extra space in your suitcase. Visit some of the stores and galleries on Ocean Ave. We especially like stopping at the Cottage of Sweets for candy and fudge after a busy day of shopping.

Visit Historic Monterey and the Monterey Bay Aquarium

While the Cannery Row part of Monterey Bay can be kitschy and touristy, there's another side of Monterey that may interest you. Just 10 minutes by car/Uber from Carmel, Monterey has a rich history as a commercial fishing and whaling port, the Spanish and Mexican capital of California from 1776 until the late 1840s, and home to California's constitutional convention. Take some time to walk "The Path of History," covering 55 sites covering this rich history (https://www.seemonterey.com/things-to-do/historic-attractions/adobes/).

Before heading back to get dressed for the wedding, stop by the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium to check out some amazing sea life. (https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/)

The Barns at Cooper Molera
History of The Barns

The Barns are part of the Cooper Molera Adobe complex, dating from 1827, which is a National Trust Historic Site in Monterey’s Old Town Historic District.

Cooper Molera is significant as the original home of John Bautista Rogers Cooper, an American sea captain who settled in Monterey during Mexican rule in the early 20th Century. Cooper became a successful merchant, and acquired extensive landholdings throughout Northern California. His wife, Encarnación Vallejo Cooper, was the sister of General Mariano Vallejo, who played an important role in California’s transition from Mexican rule to an American territory.

The complex has undergone substantial renovation in recent years and re-opened in 2019 as a shared public, commercial, and event space, including the refurbished Barns.

For those of you who are flying into SFO or SJC and have asked about the best way to get to/from Carmel, there are several options.

If you're interested, please fill out our Google Sheets document (https://bit.ly/3v3OcTo) so we can connect you with other guests who may have similar travel plans, so you can coordinate and share costs.

Car Rental: Car rentals with pickup and dropoff at SJC or SFO are relatively inexpensive, starting at $40-60/day.

Uber: Based on current pricing, Ubers will cost $100-110 one-way from  SJC and $125-150 one-way from SFO.

Monterey Airbus: This shuttle costs $45/person from SJC and $55/person from SFO. It will drop you off in downtown Monterey, where you can catch the 24 bus or an Uber for a 10 minute ride to Carmel. Visit www.montereyairbus.com.

Private Sedan/SUV Ride: This is by far the most expensive option and will cost around $300 one-way.

Accommodations

La Playa Carmel

La Playa Carmel is where we will be staying with our families. It’s a beautiful, historic boutique hotel (originally built in 1905 as a mansion for one of the Ghirardelli heiresses by a renowned landscape painter). We have a very limited number of discounted rooms in a block at La Playa Carmel, available to reserve on on a first-come, first-served basis.

**Update: All La Playa rooms in the block are full**

Lamp Lighter Inn

The Lamp Lighter Inn is just 2 blocks from La Playa Carmel and offers 11 rooms, cottages, and suites that have a quaint, seaside vibe. It’s right off Ocean Avenue and has a storybook feel, with an adorable courtyard containing Adirondack chairs and benches surrounding fire pits. Each room has a unique configuration, with some that can accommodate 3-4 guests, for those looking to share or bring kids. Rates are currently $295-$425, depending on configuration. They also have a sister inn called Forest Lodge, further up on Ocean Avenue.

To book Lamp Lighter, please email, call or text Olivia directly at osedlmayr@gmail.com or 831-254-0790 and let her know you’re part of the Berman-Fiedotin wedding group.

L'Auberge Carmel

L'Auberge Carmel, a Relais & Chateaux property, is a luxury hotel inspired by the architect's European travels in the 1920s. The hotel boasts 20 rooms surrounding a beautiful courtyard and a Michelin-star restaurant, L'Aubergine.  It's in an excellent location just off of the main shopping block on Ocean Avenue and less than a 5 minute walk from La Playa. Current rates start at $440. Visit  the hotel's website to book.

The Vagabond's House

If you're looking for B&B charm combined with modern amenities, The Vagabond's House is for you. It offers 13 renovated rooms surrounding a picturesque courtyard on a tree-lined street. However, it is a bit further from the action than other options (but still highly walkable), about a 5-7 minute walk from Ocean Avenue and 12-15 minutes from La Playa Carmel. Rooms are currently $269-$389. To stay here, please book directly.

Monte Verde Inn

This is the Liz & Richard-verified budget-friendly option. While there are several small inns in Carmel where you will likely find the best priced options, the only one we can personally vouch for is Monte Verde Inn. Rooms are no frills, but they're clean, the staff is friendly, and the location is excellent. Rates are currently $229-299. Visit the website to book.

Rental Homes & Cottages

If you're interested in a rental home, check out VRBO (which has better cancellation policies than AirBnB). Look for options as close to downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea as possible. Additionally, Carmel Cottage Inn (carmelcottageinn.com/), located 1 block from both La Playa and the beach, offers 5 cozy and historic cottages of different sizes.

Additional Resources & Tips

• Some Carmel hotels are not listed on typical sites like Expedia.com, so check out Carmel's visitor site at https://www.carmelcalifornia.com/hotels-and-inns-in-carmel.htm to search all options.
Click on the bubble at right to see a map of the hotels listed above. Additionally, at the link below is a full map of all hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
• For weekend visits, some hotels require a 2-night minimum stay covering Friday & Saturday nights. These hotels may not show up in your search results if you’re searching for Saturday 4/2 thru Monday 4/4.
• Please contact Liz with any questions or concerns about finding accommodations.

Flight Details

Carmel-by-the-Sea is located on the coast of northern California, 120 miles south of San Francisco. For those coming from afar, your best flight options will be:

San Jose International Airport (SJC): SJC is the closest major airport, located 1 hour 15 minutes from Carmel. Direct flights are available to SJC from many major U.S. airports (details on direct routes into SJC are available here: www.flysanjose.com/nonstop-destinations).

Monterey Regional Airport (MRY): Just 10 minutes from  Carmel-by-the-Sea, this is a super convenient regional airport option, but if you're coming from the East Coast or Midwest, you will need to transfer through Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas, or Denver. Many of the layover times through these cities are quite short, so this may be your quickest option, and it's worth checking. (Details on direct routes into MRY are available here: www.montereyairport.com/destinations.)

Additional Options
Additional options would be to fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland (OAK), but those are 2+ hours from Carmel.

Can my kids come?
Can my kids come?

Our Rehearsal Dinner on Saturday evening and our Wedding Ceremony & Reception on Sunday are adults-only (except for immediate family - we do need flower girls, after all!) due to venue capacity constraints and the nature of the events.

For the rest of the weekend (Friday Welcome Reception, Saturday and Sunday daytime activities, and Monday Departure Breakfast) kids are welcome to join if they're in town, please just let us know what they will be attending.

If you would like to bring your kids to Carmel for the weekend, please let us know. We don't want childcare constraints to impact anybody's ability to attend our wedding weekend or to stay for the entire time. If that's a challenge, please talk to us. We can help you find sitter care in Carmel.

What do you expect the weather to be?
What do you expect the weather to be?

The weather in Carmel/Monterey during spring will likely be in the low- to mid-60s during the day and may dip down to the high 40s/low 50s in the evenings. Yes, it's California and it's springtime, but please be prepared for weather than can get chilly, particularly at night, and because we'll be near the ocean. We recommend bringing an extra layer to all outdoor activities, especially in the evenings.

The chances of rain are low.

For more on the weather, please check here: https://weatherspark.com/m/1025/4/Average-Weather-in-April-in-Carmel-by-the-Sea-California-United-States

Will there be fire risk?
Will there be fire risk?

While, unfortunately, the wildfires in CA have gotten worse in recent years and fire season has lengthened, our wedding will take place outside of fire season, which typically extends from around June through November. California's wettest months are January-March, so April should be safely after the rains but before fire season. Of course, anything is possible, but part of the reason we chose April was to avoid the risk of fire and smoke.

What's the app for?
What's the app for?
As the wedding date approaches, we encourage you to download the Appy Couple app to your phone (see the "Our App" page on this website to learn more, and please note that the access code is "lizandrichard"). We plan to use the app to send notifications and updates to our guests during our wedding weekend (e.g., "The afterparty is now starting, and Amanda Berman has offered to buy everyone's next round. Come quickly!").

No Gifts, Please

We are asking for no gifts, please! In our combined 97 years, we have had plenty of time (and Amazon Prime access) to accumulate a lot of stuff and, fortunately, we don't need or want anything. What we care about is spending quality time with you during our special weekend.
