Guide to the Wedding Ceremony:
Ganesh Pooja : 8 AM
The wedding ceremony commences with the invocation of Lord Ganesha , the God of Wisdom and Remover of
Obstacles. Most events in Hindu culture are begun by first praying to Lord Ganesha
Punya Vachanam : 8:25 AM
This is a symbolic purification where the priest chants to invoke Lord Varuna , the God of the oceans. The priest
also prepares a Kalasa , or sacred vessel of water, which will be used throughout the ceremony to purify the
Mandap and the couple.
Vara Pooja : 8:35 AM
Likita’s parents perform a pooja to honor Sonny. Likita’s parents wash Sonny’s feet in a gesture that symbolizes
their belief that Lord Vishnu has arrived in the form of the Groom. They now offer their daughter’s hand in
marriage and the priest invoke the blessings of the ancestors of both the families.
Walking the Bride to Mandap : 8:50 AM
Bride’s father walks Likita to the Mandap as the rest of us stand up to pay respect to the occasion and to show
affection to the Bride.
Kanya Daanam : 9:00 AM
It is noted in the Hindu scriptures that there is no greater gift than the gift of a daughter in marriage. Likita’s
parents place her hands in Sonny’s hands and ask him to accept their daughter as an equal in all aspects of life.
Suma Muhurtham : 9:13 AM
The priest denotes the auspicious time for suma muhurtham , the commencement of the marriage between Likita and Sonny.
Mangalya Dharana : 9:15 AM
Sonny ties the Mangalasutra around the Likita’s neck making three knots signifying the Holy Trinity of Lord
Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. It also also represents their commitment to each other on three levels in hearts, in words, and in deeds.
Talambralu : 9:20 AM
Likita and Sonny shower each other with holy rice, flower petals and pearls to symbolize their desire for
happiness, enjoyment and commitment in life. This ritual is then turned into a game to see who will empty their
plate the fastest, bringing the couple closer as Husband and Wife.
Brahma Mudi : 9:30 AM
The priest chants hymns invoking seven blessings from Gods denoting that the tie knots are secured by Gods.
Agni : 9:40 AM
A sacred fire is started by the priest with ghee and wooden sticks to invoke the blessings from the Lord Agni, God
of Fire, and to bear witness to the ceremony.
Sapthapadi : 9:50 AM
Likita and Sonny take seven steps around the Mandap with seven vows to live happily together; to acquire
knowledge for happiness in harmony; to develop mental, physical, and spiritual strength; to prosper together by
moral and righteous means; to raise a virtuous, intelligent and loving family; to do charitable and spiritual deeds;
and to cherish each other as eternal partners.
Nagavalli : 10:10 AM
Earthen pots are placed in a square and cotton thread which is passed around Likita and Sonny’s necks.
Aarathi : 10:15 AM
Light of flame is offered to Gods as the priest chants religious hymns to represent humility and gratitude to five
elements: Akash (space), Vayu (wind), Agni (fire), Jal (water), and Prithvi (Earth).

Speeches by family and friends will conclude the ceremony
