CHICHÉN ITZÁ

As one of the most important city-states in pre-Hispanic America, Chichen Itza is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico today.

Chichen Itza is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. If you are traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or one of the many hotspots located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, there are a handful of sights you absolutely must-see.

Chichen Itza is a complex of Mayan ruins centrally located on the northern half of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. In ancient, pre-Colombian times, Chichen Itza was a vibrant city with a diverse population of Mayan people extending well into the tens of thousands. Today, the site is home to the remnants of many ancient Mayan structures, including the famed El Castillo pyramid that dominates the site’s center.

How old is Chichen Itza?

Archaeologists are unsure when, exactly, the building of Chichen Itza began, though historical records suggest that the city was in its early phases of development around 600-750 A.D.

The growth and development of Chichen Itza span several centuries. Most estimates put the city at well over 1,500 years old. Historical records show that Chichen Itza was a major focal point in the Northern Maya Lowlands from the Late Classic (AD 600–900) through the Terminal Classic (AD 800–900) and into the early portion of the Postclassic period (AD 900–1200).

When was Chichen Itza built?

Through these time periods, the city gradually grew in size and diversity. Some colonial Mayan sources and archaeological Records suggest that Chichen Itza was sacked at several points during the 13th century. Chichen Itza was eventually conquered by the Spanish in the mid 16th century.

CENOTES

A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater. The regional term is specifically associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, where cenotes were commonly used for water supplies by the ancient Maya, and occasionally for sacrificial offerings. There are local Cenotes to Playa Del Carmen and many others in the region to spend a day or the afternoon.

. .
DAY CRUISE TO COZUMEL

The primary gateway between Cozumel and the mainland of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen.
How far is it to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen?

Playa Del Carmen is 35-45 minutes away from Cozumel. The sea stretches 11.8 miles (19km)between the two lands. Playa Del Carmen offers multiple ferry rides throughout the day to Cozumel.

You can pay using cash or credit card and you can either book tickets via the websites in advance or pay on the day. There are lots of places that sell ferry tickets as you get close to the ferry terminal, as well as the official vendors.

Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second-largest coral reef system in the world), Cozumel is an incredible spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling.

A walking tour of Cozumel is a great way to spend a few vacation hours. The main downtown area of Cozumel spans approximately 5 blocks. Shopping, eating, drinking, and experiencing the local culture is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

1. RENT A JEEP AND DRIVE AROUND THE ISLAND

One of the best ways to explore the fantastic sights that Cozumel offers is to rent a car and drive yourself around the island. There is nopublic transport at all in Cozumel. You’ll either have to walk, take a taxi, or rent a jeep in Cozumelto get around.

2. SAN GERVASIO MAYAN RUINS

A must-visit are the Mayan ruins of Cozumel named the San Gervasio Ruins. Located in the center of the island, this trip can be done with a rental car or jeep, or if you want, there are many guided tours here.

3. JADE CAVERNS & CENOTE – ATV OR JEEP REQUIRED

Dive into the Mayan underworld with a trip to this cenote (limestone sinkhole) located in the jungles of Cozumel. Cenotes are natural caves filled with water and make for a fun day trip and a good place to cool off on a hot day in Cozumel.

4. SNORKELING OR DIVING IN COZUMEL

When in Cozumel, you must go snorkeling or scuba diving, as it is what the island is renowned for. The spectacular Mesoamerican Barrier Reef lies just offshore and is the second-largest coral reef in the world.

5. PUNTA SUR ECOLOGICAL PARK

As well as being home to one of the best beaches on the island, Punta Sur Ecological Park is a great place to head to see beautiful nature, fascinating wildlife, and interesting historical sights. As there is so much going on here, it is one of the most popular things to do in Cozumel. The park covers a vast area and lies at the southern tip of the island, around an hour’s drive from San Miguel.

While lounging on the gorgeous Punta Sur Eco Beach is delightful, it is also worth heading off to explore some of the surrounding nature. The park is home to lots of exotic birds, crocodiles, and sea turtles – among other creatures. Snorkeling the reef is very popular here, and you can also take a catamaran tour of the lagoon if you want to skip across the sparkling water with the wind in your hair!

If you visit Punta Sur during the right season, you might be lucky enough to watch sea turtles nesting along the beach and the little ones eagerly trying to make their way to the water.

Two of the main sights that people come to see are its historic lighthouses; one of them remarkably dates to the pre-Hispanic era. The other lighthouse is now home to an interesting museum that will tell you all about the history of the island. As well as that of pirates in the Caribbean and the Mayans themselves. There’s also a cool Mayan temple for you to check out if you have any energy left after seeing all the other sights in the park!
