Rottnest Island sits just offshore from the city of Perth, in Western Australia. A protected nature reserve, it's home to the quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial. White-sand beaches and secluded coves include the Basin, with its shallow waters, and Thomson Bay, the main hub and ferry port. Strickland Bay is known for its surf breaks, while reef breaks occur at Radar Reef, off the island's far western tip.
Rottnest Express sets sail from three handy locations in Fremantle and central Perth. Each departure point has different advantages – it’s easy to select one to suit your needs.
We're planning an adventure (day trip) to Rottnest Island on 9 October 2022 (the Sunday after the wedding) - see "The Adventure" on our Events page for more information. However, if you can't make it on that day, but are still keen to explore, you can book your ferry for any time that suits!
Fremantle is a port city in Western Australia that's part of the Perth metropolitan area. It's known for its maritime history, Victorian architecture and remnants from Australia's days as a British penal colony. Fremantle Prison, which housed convicts from the 1850s to 1991, now features re-created cellblocks. The 12-sided Round House, a landmark 1831 building, also briefly functioned as a jail.
you might like to book in a tour of the Fremantle Prison, or spend a day exploring the port, and surrounding areas.
Affluent Cottesloe centres on busy Marine Parade, where laid-back cafes and gelato shops overlook a sandy beach that's popular for water sports. Pizza and seafood are served at landmark Indiana Cottesloe Beach restaurant, a former tea house from 1910, while oceanfront pubs with beer gardens host “Sunday Sessions” with live music.
