AMELAND
On the website of the Tourist information you can find info about apartments, bed and breakfasts, events and more: www.vvvameland.com/
Not all listings are in English, but there is always the option to use Google Translate. Besides that page there are also the well known sites of Booking.com and Airbnb.
Two hotels we stayed ourselves and can recommend (best booked through Booking.com):
Please note that the Thursday before our wedding - 26 May - is a public holiday (Ascension Day) in The Netherlands. This means accommodation for the weekend fills up quickly!
Train or car
1. TRAIN
For travelling with public transport in the whole of The Netherlands, the easiest is to purchase an OV chipkaart. They are sold in most train stations, including Schiphol airport or Amsterdam Centraal.
Traveling by train can be expensive, there are some discounts available however. We recommend to buy a day card. Check Google for "dagkaart". You can select the best option for you. We are also happy to answer all your questions!
2. RENT A CAR
Not the cheapest option unless you are in a group. Car hire from Schiphol airport starts at about €40,- per day (excluding petrol).
Going to Ameland by ferry
1. BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
From any station take the train to Leeuwarden and from there the bus to Veerdam, Holwerd. Take the ferry from there. Ferry timetable
The bus time arrival is matched with the departure time of the ferry.
For a great route planner for all public transport you can use the app 9292, or click here: 9292.nl
2. BY CAR
You will need to make a reservation for the ferry, so plan your journey with time! For more information: Transport-on-to-ameland by car
Due to Ascension Day (Public Holiday) there are fewer ferries on Thursday 26 May! But still at least 6 a day.
1. RENT A BIKE (FIETS)
The easiest way around the island is by bike! You can rent anything from a grandma bike to electric bikes, tandems or mountain bikes. Bike rentals are located within a 5-minute walk from the ferry or in all the villages on the islands.
We have good experience with Nobel bike rent, they have rental points in all villages. For more info: Cycling Ameland
2. BUS
There are busses connecting the ferry with the villages of Nes, Hollum, Ballum and Buren. If you are staying in a more far flung place it´s better to have your own transport, either bike or car.
3. TAXI
There are a few taxi companies on Ameland, for example Cosi Taxi.
