The Engagement ceremony-- referred to as the Nichayathartham/Nishchayam-- begins with a Pooja to Lord Ganesh. After this, the bride and groom exchange rings, after which the priest will announce the Muhurtham (auspicious date and time for marriage). This officially kicks off the wedding preparations.
The bride and the groom are made to sit in mats and tree trays are kept near them containing turmeric paste, sandalwood paste, kumkum (vermillion) and scented oils. Family members from both the bride and groom's side will smear the sandalwood paste over the hands of the bride and groom, apply the kumkum on the foreheads of the couple and apply turmeric paste on their feet, legs, hands and cheeks. After everyone is done, the elder ladies in the family show the Aarti around the couple.

Wedding Rituals
Bharaat: The groom arrives with his family and friends. They are welcomed by the bride's parents.
Kashi Yatra: As per tradition, the groom plays the role of a young man who decides to leave for Kashi to pursue a life of pilgrimage and prayers. The bride's brother and father must then persuade the groom to return to the wedding.
Kanya Aagamanam: The bride enters with her family and friends.
Ganesh Pooja: The priest performs the first prayer to Lord Ganesh.
Maalai Mathal: The bride and the groom exchange garlands three times.
Oonjal (swing): The bride and groom are made to sit on a beautifully decorated swing set. They are then rocked back and forth gently as the women in the family sing songs and feed them sweets to celebrate the occasion.
Kanyadhanam: The bride’s father places her right hand over the groom’s right hand, blessing the new union.
Mangalya Dharanam: The groom ties the sacred thread (thali) around the bride's neck at the auspicious time (muhurtham).
Saptapadi: The newlyweds take seven steps around the holy fire (agni). After this ritual is complete the groom and bride are declared husband and wife both socially and religiously.
