Mykonos & Santorini
In Mykonos, the party never stops. While beaches and restaurants vary widely in style, from bohemian and relaxed to trendy and luxurious, the timeline generally stays the same – expect lunch around 2:00pm or 3:00pm, dinner after 9pm, and plenty of nightlife until the sun rises.
Santorini is known for the architecture, the romance, the sunsets. The time moves slower here than Mykonos, little streets in town couldn’t be more picturesque, while the shops and restaurants are always busy.
How to get to the islands
Fly
You can take a quick 20-30 min flight from Athens airport to most islands. Aegean and Olympic airlines are the main two, but there are some small local airlines that will get you there also.
Ferry
It’s very common and safe to take a boat or the ferry to the islands. The hydrofoils and catamarans are the quickest, the ferries are a little slower but it’s better if you’re worried about being sea-sick. It’s fun to sit on the deck, enjoy the view, plus it’s a lot cheaper than flying.
The central harbour of Athens (Pireaus) is a 35 minutes drive from the Athens airport. Pireaus is the main port of Athens from where you can take a ferry to every island (Mykonos & Santorini are about 4 hours trip). You can book your tickets on www.viva.gr or www.petas.gr or www.bluestarferries.com.
Rafina port is closer to the airport (25 minutes) and it operates a few ferry trips that get you to Mykonos & Santorini.
For your transportation from the airport to the Pireaus harbour there is a bus (X96) outside the “arrivals” terminal that will take you to a walking distance from the ferry.
