The opulent Bellagio estate was built in 1854 by the affluent Frizzone family of Milan, as a summer refuge from city life. Later, the grand estate was transformed into the most richly appointed hotel in the Como region.
In 1918, the Bucher family from Lucerne, Switzerland, took over the estate and turned it into a five-star hotel. Now eclipsing 100 years, the Serbelloni is still managed by the same family.
The hotel flaunts stately marble columns, period wall coverings, frescoed ceilings in grey and pink tones, antique Persian carpets and Murano crystal chandeliers. Throughout the grand estate, the Bucher patriarchs’ art collection features more than 200 prints of Lake Como itself.

In the quaint and peaceful town of Lenno lies the Hotel Lenno. With stunning views of Lake Como and less than 100 meters to the ferry point, this is a lovely relaxed place to stay if you wish to escape but want access to all the other busier resorts on the lake. Commanding lovely views, the villa has a gorgeous lakefront location on Lake Como’s western shore. It’s about 1,000 yards north of the pretty village of Laglio. There’s direct water access from the villa’s private dock, making it particularly convenient to explore the lake by boat. Management call it a b&b, although with only 7 rooms and two caretakers on call, it feels more like a private villa than a b&b or hotel. There’s no reception; the caretakers will show you to your room – ideal if you’re after some privacy and want to be left to your own devices. In the evenings the garden is lit up with fairy lights, which gives the place a charming atmosphere.

When you veer off from the lakeside promenade in the center of Bellagio, make your way up ancient pebbled stairs and enter through a charming arched doorway next to a giant corkscrew, you will have arrived in wine heaven. Cava Turacciolo is the Italian word for corkscrew and the name of one of Bellagio's most delightful wine bars. Every available wall and surface of the cozy stone-clad cellar is covered with wine bottles - over 300 different varieties to be exact - and cured hams and salamis dangle mouthwateringly from the vaulted ceiling. The amicable and knowledgeable staff will provide interesting insight into the labels served with each tasting menu - focused either on a single region or an Italian medley - and a selection of cured meats, cheese and olives accompany the wines. From Tremezzo lakeshore, join your guide for a hike along quaint cobblestone lanes and steps, leading up through the backstreets of the village of Griante perched proudly on the hillside. We stop off here to mix with the locals and drink a cappuccino at a bar in the heart of the village. Leaving Griante behind, we begin our hike on the "Sasso San Martino" (as this rocky outcrop is called) to the 16th-century Shrine of San Martino, beloved by pilgrims and serenity seekers for centuries. As the church is generally only open for festivals and special religious celebrations, we'll stay outside enjoying the picture-perfect views over a picnic lunch (make sure and pack a snack!) and hearing your guide's insightful introduction to the entire area, the locals, their culture and much more before returning through Griante to Tremezzo.
