TRAVEL + ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION

Cape Town is a beautiful place and we want you to have the best time while you are here. As with visiting any country, there are certain safety precautions we would like you to take note of:

- Load Shedding is a very nice way to describe the government literally shutting off electricity for large parts of the country. This is very common and will be something to take into account. Most hotels and restaurants have back-up generators, however self-catering hotels and AirBnBs might not. Be sure to ask the hosts beforehand, and what their 'load shedding area code' is.

It's best to be prepared and bring portable chargers + charge your devices any opportunity you get.

- Cash Avoid carrying large sums of cash, carrying cameras or video cameras in plain sight and leaving belongings unattended.

- Beggars and street children may approach you for a handout. You do not need to give them anything. Be aware of your bags while they are chatting to you.

- Parking At night, park in a secure, well-lit area. You might find a 'parking guard' on every corner. They will appear out of thin air once you're ready to leave and claim to have protected it while you were away. It is customary to tip these guards (only one!) 2 - 5 Rand. Don't fall for the 'I don't have any change' trick.

- Taxi If you are taking a taxi, we suggest UBER or a registered cab company that your hotel can recommend.

- Weather Make sure you are also prepared for weather that can change rapidly; bring sunblock and something warm to wear. It can cool off quite rapidly and the wind doesn't always help either.

- SIM card If you are planning on getting a local sim card for your stay please make sure to bring ID/Passport with you for this. Your hotel or someone at the airport might be able to help you with this.

MTN offers pay-as-you-go calls and data (pay and upload can be done and found in the arrival terminal in CPT Airport.

Uber operates in Cape Town and in the Cape Winelands. Cape Town is approx 45mins-1hr drive away from the Winelands.

We do however recommend you hire a car. This is so that you can easily explore Cape Town and the Winelands as there is much to see/do!

We suggest that if you are hiring a car, that you have a GPS installed. Many road names have been changed and a map book might not be up to date.

There are also safari experiences you can access within 4-5hrs drive from Cape Town (if you didn't want to fly north for a safari in the Kruger).

Cars are best booked well in advance and can be picked up and dropped off at the airport. Companies such as Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Budget, and more.

Be sure to ask for an automatic if needed - the South African standard is manual. Also be aware that in South Africa you have to drive on the left-hand-side of the road.
