Prior to joining his current law firm, Marcus clerked for a judge in Civil District Court. Ashley’s first hearing she handled on her own happened to be before that particular judge. She was nervous and called her friend and bridesmaid, Tiffany Smith, for advice before the hearing, because Tiffany had clerked for the judge.
After the hearing, she called Tiffany to report that she won her (albeit uncontested) hearing and to ask— “who is the cutie in the glasses? Who is that law clerk?” Tiffany responded, “Marcus? That’s like my kid brother.” Ashley said, “Hook me up!” Tiffany said she wasn’t sure if he was dating anyone, but like a good friend, she’d find out.
Fast forward, Marcus and Ashley both got involved in local bar associations and would often see each other in passing at meetings and events. Knowing that Ashley was likely to attend a seminar honoring the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Marcus decided to attend. She did indeed attend, and afterwards, like the gentleman he is, Marcus walked her back to her office. On the walk back, he asked for her phone number, and the rest is history!
There are a zillion great things I could say about Marcus (and if you know him, you'd agree.) But for brevity's sake, here are a few...
Marcus is incredibly supportive, patient and loving. He's the ying to my yang. I'm a go-go-go girl and he helps me to find rest and relaxation in a very easy-going way.
One of the things I love about Marcus most is that I have always felt like we are on one team. Although we are in the same field, we are never in competition with each other, but always push each other to take it to the next level. As trial lawyers, we tend to have type-A personalities at times, independent and direct (perhaps sometimes blunt). I love that Marcus is assertive (even with my boss babe personality) but not controlling, and someone who is easy to love and respect.
Ashley’s extraordinary love, kindness, and character makes me a better person. She serves as a spark to my imagination; a cook when I’m hungry; and a light to those in need of guidance. Ashley is full of adventure and makes me laugh. She is my best advocate. Ultimately, there is no one else I would rather be with and I look forward to spending the rest of our lives together.
